Dan’s Daily Links: Penguins Chasing Zucker, Jarry / Murray Contracts

Penguins trade target Jason Zucker

The NHL All-Star Skills Competition was so intense the announcers barely paid any attention to the actual on-ice product, until San Jose Sharks forward Tomas Hertl put on a Justin Bieber cutout mask for his shootout. Hopefully, you note the sarcasm. Fortunately, we have Pittsburgh Penguins trade news, contract updates, and other goodies from the All-Star weekend to make it worthwhile.

First, you can watch Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry in the shootout competition. Fast forward to the 51-minute mark (NBCsn)

Jarry may have spilled the beans to NHL.com, too. He told the league website the Penguins haven’t opened contract talks with either he or Matt Murray, yet. (NHL.com)

It’s not a Penguins trade rumor if its an actual report, got it? Don’t worry, a friend sternly corrected me on that point when I made the transition from microphone to keyboard.

We do have two trade reports from different sources which say the same thing: Penguins GM Jim Rutherford is still chasing Minnesota Wild winger Jason Zucker. Both Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet and Michael Russo of The Athletic have reported within the past day the Penguins are interested (The Athletic)

There are five new wingers who have popped up on the NHL trade block and may make their way into Penguins trade rumors. (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

Also on Sportsnet, you can get the encapsulated version of Commissioner Gary Bettman’s address. I worry about the player tracking and puck tracking information. It feels like we’re about to be overloaded with more information than most know what to do with and TV broadcasts will soon become a nightmare like watching three screen crawls and constant information in addition to the game.

Here are the five takeaways from Bettman’s chat (Sportsnet)

Boston defenseman Torey Krug is a pending UFA at the end of the season. He’d like to re-sign in Boston and Boston would like him to re-sign in Boston, but cap space is an issue. Our colleague Jimmy Murphy has some interesting dirt on the situation. The NHLPA may play a role before it’s over (Boston Hockey Now)

The New York Rangers have been scouting the Colorado Avalanche (Colorado Hockey Now)

Lastly, PHN has a space for a new sponsor. We’re proud to say our growth this season has surged past the “brand name” competition. How would you like to tell 200,000-300,000 unique readers (per month) about your business? We delivered thousands of clicks to our last primary sponsor who couldn’t continue.
