3 Things That (Might Have) Changed These Penguins (+)
The Pittsburgh Penguins of Friday and Saturday bore little resemblance to the team who inhabited the ice in the first 24 games of the season. The Penguins held a lead in a tight game, playing tight defense when it mattered, and they buried a team after getting the same 2-0 lead they had squandered eight times before.
Since the beginning of last season, the Penguins have won three in a row just five times, including this trio of victories. The paltry win streaks speak to just how poorly the Penguins have played for more than a year running.
Last season, they didn’t show anything close to their best until it was too late.
This season began and continued on the sourest notes of last season. Not only did the Penguins give up leads by the barrel full, but they were giving up goals within minutes of scoring and mistakes so many and bewildering that a count would require a CPA.
While there have been winning streaks before, albeit few, several fundamental things changed in the past week that are both sustainable and in keeping with the architect’s intent.
