Alex Nedeljkovic, Pittsburgh Penguins

Alex Nedeljkovic, coming off a 39-save performance in the Penguins’ 5-3 victory over Edmonton Thursday, will get another start when the Penguins face Ottawa today at 4:08 p.m. at PPG Paints Arena.

Coach Mike Sullivan, who announced that Nedeljkovic would be called on again, also said that center Evgeni Malkin will sit out his third consecutive game because of an unspecified upper-body injury.

Penguins forward Phil Tomasino will miss his fourth game in a row because of an unspecified lower-body issue.

Sullivan indicated he wanted one of the goalies to “take” the net. I guess looks like early indications are it’s Ned.

Pleased with that decision. Ned is more responsible. Tends to take things more seriously. If he makes a mistake, he calls himself out on it. The skaters in front of him, appears to me at least, play a better game with him in Net. A more responsible game let’s say.

Ned and Jarry have nearly identical stats on the year. They are both below replacement level at this point and among the worst in advanced goalie stats leaguewide. It’s interesting the perception that the team plays better with Ned, but the stats don’t support that. Overall, the pens score much more with Jarry, at about .6 more goals per game. The goal differential for Jarry is -2 compared to Ned at -9. It seems that they are trending in different directions though. The lingering perception of Ned being better comes from the winning streak at the end of last year… Read more »

Not necessarily true. I record drinking 2.8 more beers and 11.6 more grams of nicotine when Jarry is playing and it due to MSL (my stress level) plus my cursing rate goes up 24% with a corresponding increase in decibels when Jarry is in there so its not as even as you think.

I like Ned, but I have a feeling he gets traded at the deadline. Not sure of his value – Second rounder ? I’d be happy with Blomqvist starting and Jarry backing up for the duration, next season split games 50 and 32

I hope he does get traded so we can live the guys in minors up. They won’t be able to move Jarry contract.

They both do better with a 2 to 1 ratio of games…that’s Jarry’s 2 to Ned’s 1… but if you wanna force the back up into a number 1 role, then by all means, expect more mediocrity from both long term. Although the pittsburgh media will shill their favorite hard enough that you won’t notice any of this anyway. Like when Ned is ‘battling’ and making acrobatic saves, it’s never to compensate for being out of position in the first place, of course. And when Jarry does it, it’s always because he is fighting the puck, because he is a… Read more »

Ned giving up 4 goals on first 9 shots is not taking charge. This would have been a good game to get his trade value up.
