Breaking: Penguins’ Tomasino OUT After Getting Elbowed by Rangers’ Forward
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Philip Tomasino scored the game-tying goal against the New York Rangers later in the third period and was promptly elbowed before he could celebrate. In a move far too reminiscent of former New York captain Jacob Trouba, who was traded Friday, New York forward Sam Carrick raised his forearm perpendicular to the ice and hot Tomasino high, though replays were inconclusive exactly where Carrick connected.
Tomasino dropped to the ice as the goal light flashed at Madison Square Garden.
It was a vintage Trouba chicken wing, very similar to the one in which Trouba concussed Penguins captain Sidney Crosby in Game 5 of the teams’ 2022 Round One series.
Tomasino bounced up to celebrate the big goal at 7:33, his third in five games with the Penguins. However, he didn’t take another shift for almost six minutes. He took one shift after the goal at 13:14 of the third period and exited the game.

According to Penguins coach Mike Sullivan, who spoke to the media at 5 p.m., Saturday in advance of the Penguins’ game against the Toronto Maple Leafs at PPG Paints Arena, Tomasino is out with an upper-body injury. Sullivan didn’t offer any further information.
Jesse Puljujarvi served as the extra forward Friday and will draw into the lineup unless Sullivan chooses the rare step of dressing seven defensemen.
The Penguins acquired Tomasino, 23, on Nov. 25 from the Nashville Predators. He has four points (3-1-4) in five games.
