Dan’s Daily: VGK Wins Wild Game 5, Penguins Should Chase Dubas

Toronto Maple Leafs, NHL trade rumors, Kyle Dubas to the Pittsburgh Penguins?

Let’s get a couple of things straight. First, the Toronto Maple Leafs got screwed. Twice. They scored the tying goal in the second period, only to have it incorrectly waved off, then Florida Panthers defenseman Radko Gudas committed a pair of obvious penalties to create the scoring chance that ended Toronto’s season. Third, the Pittsburgh Penguins must capitalize on Toronto’s foibles and wrap both arms around GM Kyle Dubas as soon as possible.

Also, Florida’s Matthew Tkachuk threw one more dig at Toronto fans for disrespecting Florida, the Vegas Golden Knights won an incredibly entertaining Game 5, the Vezina and Hart Trophy finalists have been named, and for God’s sake, stop trying to argue the whistle blew. I’ll put the conclusive proof that slays that argument at the bottom.

Also, a huge congrats to our Austin Stanovich of LA Hockey Now. Last summer, the LA Kings called us to propose we create LA Hockey Now. After a few weeks of scouring the market, we found Austin. He worked hard despite pursuing his master of journalism (I didn’t have the heart to tell the guy he was spending $100,000 on a career that ranks below licking electrical outlets). Friday, Austin finished his postgraduate work. Congrats!

Pittsburgh Penguins / Steelers, Pirates:

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: A few Penguins trades this summer? Not so fast, writes Dave Molinari. The Penguins’ trade impediment.

And after the Maple Leafs were done, the answer was obvious. Go get him. Here’s why the Pittsburgh Penguins should pursue Kyle Dubas.

Steelers Now:

Joey Porter Jr. and Broderick Jones got a workout. Coaches worked their technique at Steelers Rookie Camp.

Jones will have a few tough games in the early season. Get a look at the Steelers’ schedule.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now:

Instability at key positions as losses are mounting for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

PBN+: A .143 batting average isn’t deterring the Pirates on Austin Hedges.

NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, National Hockey Now:

Vegas Hockey Now: Viva, viva, Las Vegas! It’s hard to succinctly describe everything in Game 5, from major penalties to five power-play goals. It was a wild Game 5 win for the Vegas Golden Knights.

Here’s HOW the Golden Knights did it. Golden Knights turning points.

Sportsnet: A sentiment echoed by many, and plenty dramatic. The end of the era and roster in Toronto.

Also, Matthew Tkachuk had to throw a little shot at Toronto fans for chanting “we want Florida!” He got the last laugh.

Florida Hockey Now: 3-2 in OT.  Florida Panthers eliminate Toronto.

Carolina is next for Florida.

**Nashville Hockey Now: Team sources tell our Michael Gallagher to be on the lookout. If there is a coaching change, here’s who leads the Nashville Predators.

Calgary Hockey Now: The Flames are playing hardball and denying teams permission to speak to former GM Brad Treliving.

Patrick Division:

Philly Hockey Now: A new president and a permanent GM. How Keith Jones and Danny Briere landed their jobs with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Washington Hockey Now: Who could be the Washington Capitals’ next coach?

NYI: Ilya Sorokin is a Vezina finalist.

Adams Division:

Boston Hockey Now: The Hart Trophy Finalists, otherwise known as Connor McDavid and second place.

Montreal Hockey Now: Gurianov for Dadonov. The Montreal Canadiens trade review.

Buffalo Hockey Now: Alex Tuch scored twice for Team USA.

Detroit Hockey Now: He’s a renowned coach in Russia, but he’s staying there. NO to the NHL for Sergei Fedorov.

Finally…

I mean, you should know better than to argue with me! Was it a goal? Here — conclusive proof. Yep. Bobrovsky didn’t relax or kick the puck in after a whistle. It crossed the first time. How does the situation room get that wrong?
