Dan’s Daily: D-Man Rips Rangers; Penguins Criticism; Gavin McKenna’s Filthy Goal

The Pittsburgh Penguins got a healthy dose of criticism Sunday, but coach Mike Sullivan went macro by calling out his team’s lack of interest in defending. The Penguins lost on Sunday, and it was hard to watch because they indeed defended like matadors. We also explored the summer NHL trade market and if the Penguins could trade Ryan Graves in a bad contract swap with a Metro rival. Elsehwere in the Daily, a scratched defenseman ripped the New York Rangers, Rick Tocchet’s future will be decided very soon, and Brock Boeser could be the subject of a free agency bidding war.
81 for 81. As someone correctly noted via social media, yes, other outlets around the league have covered all 81 games. However, I do believe I’m the only reporter in the NHL this season (and in some time) to get this far. 81 straight. Thank you for coming along for the ride. One more. And then we’re off to Wilkes-Barre.
Also, the Penguins’ tribute to Ray Shero was very good. Colleague Dave Molinari isn’t one for sentiment, but his praise spoke loudly. It’s been a tough year for my friends and colleagues who have been around the organization for a good while.
Ray Shero’s legacy goes far beyond championships.
He will be remembered most for how he treated people – with respect, belief, and support.

Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Dave hammered the team in his postgame recap. He was being kind. The worst team in the Eastern Conference thoroughly outclassed the Penguins.
Boston Hockey Now: Here’s the flip side. The Boston Bruins postgame.
The analysis section. How do you analyze or opine about that one? Sullivan made it easy. The coach didn’t directly say it, but his indirect comparison to the good version of his team vs. what we saw Sunday had the scent of Michel Therrien’s 2006 rant. Here’s the video, as well as calling out the players. Well, he did have praise for one player who’s had a rough year. Check out the tumultuous Penguins report card.
And here’s the postgame video on our YouTube page.
Steelers Now: I think this is a good sign. The NFL fired three bad referees.
Also, the answer is yes. Our new No. 2 reporter on the Steelers beat Spencer Thomas (and Duquesne alum) astutely pointed out a new wrinkle in the Steelers QB chase. Could the Saints pivot and make a play for Aaron Rodgers?
I’m done with the Rodgers saga. Hey Steelers, he’s just not that into you.
NHL Rumors, News, & National Hockey Now
Let’s start with consensus 2026 top pick Gavin McKenna. This is why the New York Rangers might give the Penguins their 2025 pick, even if it’s protected. You don’t want to lose a chance at this kid. Watch this goal. I’ve never seen anything like it.
GAVIN MCKENNA GOAL OF THE YEAR?! 🤯
The top 2026 #NHLDraft prospect is a human highlight reel!

The way kids use their edges exploded overnight after Connor McDavid showed the world how to do it. The new stickhandling, like its lacrosse, is wicked. What the new generation can do is silly. The game is about to change, and I’m cool with it, as long as the puck stays on the ice.
NY Post: Calvin de Haan ripped how the Rangers are treating him. He even did so on his way to the ice, quipping to reporters, “This is F—-d up!” He later explained on social media, but it’s just the latest sign that things are not well at the Garden.
New Jersey Hockey Now: From a silly goal to a silly hit, Paul Cotter went dirty Sunday, and the New York Islanders were very … very unhappy. Cotter is facing a longer suspension today. It’s another bad bit of New Jersey Devils news.
Sportsnet: Vancouver wants to pay Brock Boeser about $40 million over five years. Luke Fox thinks several other teams will pay quite a bit more over a longer term. A bidding war could be brewing.
Detroit Hockey Now: The coach didn’t mince words when talking about why Detroit didn’t take that next step this season, as so many (yep, including me) expected. Coach Todd McLellan let the Detroit Red Wings have it.
