Dan’s Daily: Oilers Shopping D-Men, Montreal has Looming Decisions

NHL trade rumors Marc Bergevin

It’s been quiet, too quiet, on the Pittsburgh Penguins trade front. After GM Jim Rutherford paid handsomely for speedy winger Kasperi Kapanen, the goalies were next on the menu, but it’s been quiet. The Edmonton Oilers could make a splash in the NHL trade market as they begin to shop a couple of valuable pieces, and the emergence of the young centers in Montreal may make veterans available.

First, we examined one Penguins trade potential: the Calgary Flames and what Calgary has which fits the market value (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

As a cheap tease, so you read the Calgary breakdown, the defenseman really caught my eye, but I know Sam Bennett will be the apple to which most of you gravitate. Make sure to read the pros and cons of Bennett.

Now to the rest of the league and, honestly, a couple of teams who could factor into the Penguins trade discussions.

Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports the emergence of the young Montreal Canadiens forwards could make Philip Danault available (Montreal Gazette)

Given the Penguins’ prior history of interest in Max Domi, and need for a third-line center, keep an eye on Montreal. Every offseason, the Penguins and Montreal dominate NHL trade rumors, but this year they will be linked.

The Edmonton Oilers are another stocked team that will be hurt by the flat salary cap. Playoff failures will also motivate Edmonton to make significant changes. David Staples of the Edmonton Journal writes that two of Edmonton’s top-four defensemen could be on the move (Edmonton Journal)

Staples believes Edmonton would move a blueliner for a starting goalie. Does anyone know a team that is trying to move a starter? If you think of one, let me know!
