Dan’s Daily: Domi Deletes Canadiens, Penguins Goalie Trade Coming?

Before everything is confirmed or denied, it appears Pittsburgh Hockey Now will have more information later this morning on the potentially impending Pittsburgh Penguins trade. GM Jim Rutherford caused a ruckus on Monday when he told our colleague and competitor at The Athletic a deal involving a goalie was coming. We have a plethora of NHL trade rumors and speculation beginning, the Dallas Stars rallied for a dramatic win in Game 2, and the New York Islanders walloped the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 1.
Try not to shed a tear when the Flyers lose, eh?
How would you feel if the NHL had to return to the bubble to start the 2020-21 season? On Monday night, a high-ranking league official told PHN the league is considering that possibility (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)
Jim Rutherford went on the record with Josh Yohe, on Monday. Rutherford proclaimed trade talks for the Penguins goalies have already started (The Athletic)
I usually don’t link to direct competitors, but Jim and Josh have a good relationship. And Josh is a good dude. I think PHN is going to have a follow-up story with more information soon. Maybe.
Also, in case you missed it, we’ve already answered the question — What is Matt Murray worth on the trade market? (PHN+)
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa dove into the NHL trade rumors when he examined the Ottawa Senators goalie situation. He included Matt Murray as an option (Ottawa Sun)
Max Domi and Ryan Poehling appear to be on their way out of Montreal. The pair deleted all references to the Montreal Canadiens from their social media accounts. (danslescoulisses.com)
Last week, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman stirred speculation when he predicted the Penguins would acquire Domi. Also, Montreal was reportedly unhappy that Poehling didn’t stay in better shape during the pandemic.
The hot name in the NHL trade rumors is Johnn Gaudreau. What is Gaudreau worth on the trade market? (Calgary Sun)

It’s not so sunny in Philadelphia. The New York Islanders blackout of Philadelphia in Game 1 was impressive. (NYI Hockey Now)
Colorado beat themselves in Game 2, and now trail the Dallas Stars 2-0 in the best of seven. Uh oh (NHL.com)
It became a love fest, including Charlie McAvoy laughingly blowing a kiss to Zdeno Chara on Monday (Boston Hockey Now)
It’s no secret Max Domi’s father Tie is very good friends with Mario, I hope that’s not the reason for acquiring him. Anyway. will the current best Coach in the NHL , Barry Trotz win another Cup? Funny, as I wrote on these pages previously, Trotz put in Ross Johnston after losing game 4 after the most physical performance of Wilson, Hathaway et al. up to that point in the series. In game 5 with Johnston those Caps were very quiet . Trotz gets what Penguins Coach Mike Sullivan does not. Would Sullivan have scratched Brassard for Johnston? Given his… Read more »
I agree that this team needs to get bigger. Faster is always nice, but not at the expense of size. After 2016 so many teams in the league copycatted the pens speed blueprint with the idea that you can’t hit what you can’t catch. But guys like Trotz and Berube showed the hockey world that you don’t have to catch anything if you sit back and let it come to you. You can also beat it up when it arrives on your doorstep. And you can negate the advantage of fleet footed dmen on your opponent’s roster by employing zone… Read more »
Forgot to go where I originally was thinking. Domi to me doesn’t fit that. Go after somebody bigger.
Colorado seems like a good team to send murray to. They are a contending team, with cap space, and the need for another NHL starting goalie. I feel Murray would want to play for a team whose best days are ahead of them. This also applies to any top player on the Pens ie Malkin/Letang as Colorado could take a 9 million dollar contract on and still have room.
I agree about Letang however I’m not ready to give up on Malkin especially after finding out that he was playing injured and he still led the team in shot’s, but wouldn’t hesitate listening to offer’s for Letang he has been a liability for the pens with the horrible turnovers and trying to be too fancy!! Plus it would free up some cap and possibly get a draft pick back ? Who knows what way they go but they have to at least be entertaining the possibility of maybe it’s time to make a trade that will improve and impact… Read more »
The Toronto Maple Leafs are trading forward Kasperi Kapanen to the Pittsburgh Penguins, reports Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Is this true Dan?
If Rutherford traded the 15 pick overall for Kasperi Kapanen then he needs fired. A third liner in Toronto has speed some scoring touch but if he gave the 1st it’s robbery.
Just hope its not Jarry going out. Hate the trade jr made today.
I don’t think the penguins over payed for Kapanen , actually I didn’t like the fact that he was traded to Toronto in the phil Kessel trade when it went down. Actually I think his style fits the penguins style that they are trying to play. Also he is just 24 and is going to get a lot better especially if he keeps implementing the 2-way game in his reputwar!!! He definitely makes an upgrade to the top 6 in Pittsburgh,, if I was Rutherford I would not hesitate listening to offer’s on Chris Letang, hear me out before you… Read more »
