Dan’s Daily Links: Oilers New GM, ‘Canes Troll Cherry…Again

Published

on

At least one Game 7 is on the schedule and Columbus will try to force a second one tonight. The Edmonton Oilers have a new GM and this time they got a steady hand with experience building champions. NBC got great ratings for Columbus-Boston Game 5 and Pittsburgh Hockey published perhaps the two most controversial Pittsburg Penguins report cards: Kris Letang and Phil Kessel.

If Edmonton didn’t get Ken Holland, their new GM would have been a second choice. Holland built Detroit, rebuilt Detroit and rebuilt them again. They’re on the cusp on competitiveness again but Steve Yzerman will helm them from here. Ken Holland will try to build around some kid named Connor McDavid. (Edmonton Journal)

But Oilers fans were not altogether pleased. A ton of Twitter snark followed (Edmonton Journal)

It’s the best move. The Oilers needed an experienced voice to weed out the decay within the organization and ignore the Red Wine Summits (The Oilers vanguard players like Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey held considerable sway over the organization and liked to meet often in Edmonton over bottles of wine which you and I are unlikely to afford. Coffey was even hired as a part-time assistant coach last year).

St. Louis forced Game 7 by beating Dallas Sunday night. It was controversial as St. Louis scored their third goal in the third period as Dallas goalie Ben Bishop lay on the ice in pain (Dallas Morning News)

Columbus and Boston. Game 6. This series has been every bit as brutal as the LA Kings and Chicago Blackhawks West Finals.

Tom Brady was pretty pumped up after Boston won Game 5 Saturday. He put down his giant pink hat at Churchill Downs and dropped an NSFW (not safe for work) comment on Zdeno Chara’s Instagram page (Yahoo Sports)

I can’t believe 42-year-old Chara is using Instagram.

The Carolina Hurricanes must be paying Don Cherry. The organization again clapped back in a humorous way after Grapes jeered their fans for skipping the regular season but showing up for the playoffs. Here’s the new T-shirt in Carolina (Sportsnet)

And if you’re a Monday-Friday PHN reader (welcome back), here is the Kris Letang report card. Also hotly debated in social media and fan forums. Kris Letang: A Great Season Undone? (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

I’ll only tell you this: I don’t care about Pittsburgh Penguins player loyalties. Giving you the most accurate and complete picture is all that I’m after. How you incorporate the information into your world is up to you.
