Dan’s Daily: Love is Bruins Finalist; Trade Targets; Penguins Coach Update

Mitch Love, Washington Capitals assistant coach. Pittsburgh Penguins coaching search

As the coaching carousel turns, multiple teams might be humming All You Need Is Love. The Boston Bruins are chasing a primary candidate for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ job. However, PHN reported Tuesday that the team is also high on another candidate to fill the head coach position. The folks at DFO put out their top trade bait list, and a couple of the players we’ve circled for the Penguins are high on the list, as well as one Penguins player. The Edmonton Oilers’ train of destiny is gaining steam, and the Vegas Golden Knights’ push to shed salary for Mitch Marner could get interesting.

Let’s do the big notes in rapid fire.

Today is Live Chat day! I’ve got some stories to tell, and we’ll really dig into the Penguins’ coach search. When I tell you people raved..RAVED about Todd Nelson, I am not overselling. Make sure you join our YouTube community here.

I spent six hours in a bar on Tuesday. While such feats might seem like a short day for sports writers during an offseason, the reason I occupied a watering hole for the better part of a work day was that I had two meetings. A wonderful company from New York flew into town to see us about growing National Hockey Now in ways that I’ve only dreamed. We’ve been circling each other for some time, and we finally pushed the puck across the goal line. Meetings are much easier when the other side gives you everything you ask for and buys lunch. And then we bought beers and dinner for the second round of meetings with business partners. Big news to follow. Big change in my life, too.

We’re going to have a HUGE subscription sale today. Huge. Make sure you’re following us on X to get the first crack at the sale.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Todd Nelson. You should get familiar with him. Fortunately, I’m here, and we’ve got some inside chatter and the important details to inform your opinions (you know, if that’s important). Here’s the latest that we are hearing on the Penguins’ coaching search.

The war in Ukraine and the assault upon it have not yet ended, which will again prohibit the Russians from participating in the 2026 Winter Olympics. As a very small footnote on the international stage, but significant locally, that is also a sad end to Evgeni Malkin’s international career.

Steelers Now: One Hall of Fame Steeler has had enough of Aaron Rodgers. Of course, Rodgers is not yet a Steelers quarterback, but Terry Bradshaw ripped him just the same. Here’s the Steelers news.

PBN+: Let’s do the Pirates Q&A for subscribers. If you subscribe to PHN+, you can indeed read the Q&A. So, who is off limits and the next bit of trade bait for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

The Athletic ($): There are two remaining candidates for the Boston Bruins head coaching position. Marco Sturm and Penguins candidate Mitch Love. On Saturday, we examined why the Penguins might not be the best fit for Love, and sources say Boston is about ready to make a decision.

Daily Faceoff: Gee, Erik Karlsson on the trade list? Yep. DFO rolls through their Top 20 trade board. The interesting thing was that Frank Seravalli reports some of the young Buffalo Sabres players are unhappy, including J.J. Peterka, and are quite open to a trade.

Vegas Hockey Now: Soooo, Mitch Marner reportedly likes Vegas as a destination. But how will the VGK clear space for him? Hannah Kirkell has the four Golden Knights trade options.

Sportsnet: The Edmonton Oilers are flexing. The Dallas Stars are good, but Edmonton is outclassing them. Game 4 was the same result as Game 3, and Connor McDavid is one game away from another shot at his ticket to being allowed into the greatest ever conversation.

You have to win the Stanley Cup to be in the club. Thems the rules.

Chicago Hockey Now: The intro pressers are often a time of great hope and joy and agenda setting. Such was the case Tuesday, as Jeff Blashill is the new coach of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Florida Hockey Now: Paul Maurice has pushed all of the right buttons over the last few years behind the Florida bench. After Florida failed to complete the sweep of Carolina in Game 4, Maurice wasn’t too happy with his team and let the Florida Panthers know it.

TSN: The trial of the five 2018 Team Canada players accused of sexual assault continued Tuesday as the Crown introduced the police interrogation of Michael McLeod into evidence. McLeod’s 2018 statements contradicted testimony earlier in the trial, specifically–and quite importantly–on the pretense under which he invited others into the room, and investigators asked why he recorded the consent videos during the incident.
