Dan’s Daily: Goalie Trade Talk; Penguins Hold RFA Keys

We have almost made it through the doldrums of one of the sleepiest off-seasons in memory. The finish line to this snoozer is within sight as the NHL trade chatter is now centering on goalies, and the Edmonton Oilers could be eyeing up a few young netminders. Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas admitted he holds the keys to the RFA market for a couple of teams that have called to talk trade. We did some sleuthing to name names. And, the Gaudreau wives announced a foundation honoring their late husbands, Matthew and Johnny.

A PHN commenter pointed out that it has been years since a trade happened at this point in August, but something tells me that the clogged off-season has to break at some point. The GMs may be taking a breather today, but there is more work to do before the season starts.

Then again, that has been true for weeks, eh? Tech made more changes to the website yesterday, so let me know if you encounter any bugs. You may notice that an obvious non-hockey person and non-sports fan did a few of the arrangements, including opting to put a Flyers video in the middle of our homepage.

Yeah, I have to talk to them about that.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Dubas admitted teams have called to reacquire their draft picks. It is rather obvious why they would do that, so we did some sleuthing to figure out what comes next. Here are the teams that are calling and the players they would want. The Penguins trade keys.

YouTube: Julianne Pelusi and I knocked out a couple of Penguins videos last night. First up, more on the possible trades for teams to pursue RFAs and Dubas’s bad luck that became his origin story, leading to becoming the Penguins GM.

Julianne is helping me and Alan Saunders do more video work, so let me know if you like the interviewee format. We’re experimenting with what works, and eventually, I’d like Julianne to be a video reporter for us. Let me know what you think–no wrong answers.

Steelers Now: It seems everyone is happy and things are jelling for the new-look team under head coach Mike Tomlin. “God, Family, and Damnit, Football,” is the new rally cry for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now: John Perrotto is the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be. I hate to downplay my own outlet, but he should have been leading the coverage at a newspaper a long time ago. Their loss. John teed up the Buccos, who were utterly destroyed by the Brewers this week. I mean, destroyed. Here’s why the Brewers win, and your Pirates lose.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

Daily Hive: Bob Stauffer and Cam Robinson are talking Edmonton Goalies. I’m still hesitant to put Robinson on my list of insiders, but Stauffer is close to the team. Both focused on the big Detroit Red Wings’ farmhand Sebastian Cossa.

We know that Edmonton tried to get Arturs Silovs before Vancouver sent him to the Penguins. Cossa would make a lot of sense, but they can also wait it out and see if Michael DiPietro hits waivers in Boston. Nico Daws would also be a no-risk possibility if New Jersey waives him in training camp.

Oh just make a trade already!

NHL.com: On Good Morning America, Meredith and Madeline Gaudreau, the wives of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, who were killed in August 2024 by an alleged drunk driver, announced a foundation to honor their late husbands and help others.

Forever Blueshirts: Gerard Gallant is headed to Russia to coach, but he’s “a little pissed off” that he didn’t land an NHL job. The former Rangers coach popped off.

TSN: Well, that’s not good–Utah Mammoth Caleb Desnoyers, who was drafted fourth overall, underwent wrist surgery and is out for a few months.

Philly Hockey Now: McKenna or Verhoeff? Will James asked a solid question–Would either player complete the Philadelphia Flyers rebuild?

New Jersey Hockey Now: Sometimes, prospects just don’t cut it, or take a lot longer than expected. James Nichols has the somewhat ironic story–After missing his chance last season, an injury to another is giving Simon Nemec a second chance.

Montreal Hockey Now: If you want to bash the Penguins’ Erik Karlsson trade, I suspect this is the draft pick you’ll circle. With the 21st overall pick in the ’24 Draft, Montreal got a player who is looking better and better. As our Marc Dumont counts down the top Montreal Canadiens prospects, here is the breakdown of No. 4, Michael Hage.

Dan, what weight do you think the NHL and the Pens put on family disruption this time of the year when trading players? There seems to be none during the season, and especially at the trade deadline. Or, do you think the team’s needs will take precedence no matter what time of year it is?

Does any sport other than hockey care about the whole “family disruption” thing?

As August marches on with no roster changes, perhaps we are left with the old strategy of fighting for a playoff berth with existing personnel and using trade deadline to help mold the rebuild? However do we move forward with our “best” top 6 d’s or open with 2-3 kids to begin their transition now?

If Dubas does nothing, this is a failure on his part. He pretty much jammed up the roster with more veterans while blocking players like Avery Hayes, Broz, and St. Ivany chances. I know Kyle and his Muse kisses up to the media, but at some point when does his smooth talking and waffling get called out? Is it a rebuild or going for the playoffs with this defective roster?
