Dan’s Daily: Pitching a Jarry Trade; Penguins Gift Keeps Giving

After the exhausting and emotional news cycle Thursday, Friday was about lining up the last bits of unfinished business on the NHL trade market. Should the Edmonton Oilers take a shot at acquiring Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry? Sportsnet made the case for doing it. The same goes for the Calgary Flames dealing Nazem Kadri. Elsewhere in the Daily, a former Penguins winger will get a PTO with the New York Rangers, why the Detroit Red Wings should go all out for Jason Robertson, and we examined the Penguins’ trade gift that keeps on giving.
I want to thank you for your restraint in the comments on Friday. I only edited one comment for language, and as far as I could see, we didn’t delete any. The sexual assault trial was a lightning rod for a lot of different emotions and reactions, but the only comment we edited used language that could have held us liable for libel (though I don’t believe the reader had any ill intent).
On the trade front, PHN has held off on a few speculative Penguins trade stories because–quite frankly–I thought we were going to see a trade or three by now. Even though a full quarter of our audience leaves when Steelers training camp starts (only to return in January with gifts of divine knowledge and condemnation, you know the types), we will start to dig a little deeper into the possibilities surrounding Jarry and other veteran players.
Away we go.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Let’s revisit the Penguins trade that keeps on giving, and will for a couple of more years, too. When the Penguins traded Jake Guentzel to the Carolina Hurricanes, they got three prospects, an NHL winger, and a draft pick. General manager Kyle Dubas further multiplied those assets. So, here’s the full trade tree and what it has meant for the Penguins rebuild.
Steelers Now: The first few days of training camp are showing something that could be quite positive for the Steelers offense, but it does appear there is a problem on the offensive line. Alan Saunders has the Steelers takeaways.
Pittsburgh Baseball Now: Friday night, the Pirates played 11 innings but had just one … ONE … hit, and lost. Moving on, the MLB trade rumors are swirling around Oneil Cruz. John Perrotto gets honest–what a Yankees-Pirates trade would look like.
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
Sportsnet: With Arturs Shilovs in the mix, should the Penguins trade away Tristan Jarry? Sportsnet not only asked that question, but circled the Edmonton Oilers as the team that should consider it. I’ve often made the case that Jarry is much better than Penguins fans have given him credit for, though last season was a disaster. Here’s the Oilers’ case to get a goalie, and maybe it should be Jarry.
And the boys up North listed five landing spots for Nazem Kadri, too.
NHL.com: This contract surprised me by its length and value. The Carolina Hurricanes dropped a nice payday on rookie Jackson Blake for eight years and $45 million.
That’s a lot of risk for a player who had 34 points last season.
Forever Blueshirts: Remember Conor Sheary? He’s bounced around the league the last few years, but he signed a PTO for a chance to catch on with former Penguins coach Mike Sullivan and the New York Rangers.
Detroit Hockey Now: Jason Robertson. Detroit Red Wings. Kevin Allen thinks it is a very good fit and uses some pretty good circumstantial evidence, including the Red Wings’ acquisition of Alex DeBrincat and the urgent need for GM Steve Yzerman to accelerate the next phase. It would be a big-time Red Wings trade.

Sheary is Sully’s nephew-in-law (married to Sully’s niece). I wonder how that factored into the PTO?
I’m guessing quite a significant amount
To EDM:
Jarry 5.38M (1.63M retained), 3 years left on deal
Acciari 2M, 2026 free agent
To PIT:
Henrique 3M, 2026 free agent
Kulak 2.75M, 2026 free agent
2nd or 3rd round pick (depending how much is retained on Jarry)
Interesting article on Jarry trade saying they keep Skinner and have them as the duo. The article was weak and didn’t offer any solution of what they would have to give up and didn’t point out that Jarrys playoffs number and second half numbers have been bad or worse than Skinners.
Perhaps EDM having those 2, Skinner and Jarry, splitting a whole season would be a smart trade. 1st half of season Jarry 1G, Skinner 2G; 2nd half of season Skinner 1G, Jarry 2G – playoffs ride the hot hand. Speaking of goalies, the idea of taking on Carey Price’s 10.5 mil cap hit to accrue more assets, is not the worst idea – I assume he would continue on LTIR so he would not take up a roster spot. If taking on 3.5 mil equates to a 2nd round pick, I’d have to think 10.5 mil is at minimum a… Read more »
Why can’t people read the Steelers and Pens news at the same time?
It’s hard to see a scenario where the Penguins would retain salary on Tristan Jarry, especially with three years left on his deal. Retaining salary is typically reserved for expiring contracts or when a team is desperate to move a player; neither applies here. Jarry may have had a rough season, but as the article itself points out, his career numbers are solid (.909 SV%, 152 wins), and he was playing behind one of the worst defensive teams in the league (26th in high-danger chances allowed). If you adjust for the defensive environment, Jarry’s performance looks a lot more reasonable.… Read more »
I tend to agree with what you’re saying here. I would only retain on Jarry, if it increases the return, but that does eat 1of 3 RS slots for the next 3 years and limits a flip and trade strategy near the 2026 dead line. However, the pragmatic view is the teams who are interested are at or near the upper limit – so you are probably forced to RS and/or take a salary back (which is ideally expiring in Summer 2026) to make a deal happen. If the return is solid and they have to eat 25-50% of Jarry’s… Read more »
Totally depends on how much faith the organization has in the other goalies in the system. As bad as Jarry has been at times, he’s been equally magnificent at others. It would be foolish to think he will automatically be the best or worst version that we’ve seen. You can’t get rid of him and just hope someone else will be better.
Give it up already. Twist statistics all you want, Jarry is not a good NHL goalie. He has shown what he is a fundamentally flawed goalie. They cannot make the playoffs with him and maybe they can without him.
My concern with Jarry is that he will do what he did last March/April, namely get hot, run off a big win streak, and tank our draft position. This is a bottom-5 roster and drafting 11th again would be a disaster.
Drafting 11th again would only be a disaster for those teams committed to avoiding the best available player.
However, it certainly can be a potential disaster for teams showing off their acumen by taking smaller, slower, weaker players who through the magic of alchemy, will be refined into gold out of raw mediocrity.
I’m hopeful that this comment will not age well. See you here 726/27.
Haha I see what you did there
Ain’t gonna happen
