Dan’s Daily: Winnipeg Delirious; Avs Fallout; Penguins Baby Crazy

The Pittsburgh Penguins are having babies, while we dove into some meaty issues and Penguins trade scenarios in the subscriber Q&A. We tried to stuff a few inside nuggets and as much blunt honesty as we could in the latest back-and-forth column. Elsewhere in the Daily, the Winnipeg Jets were one second away from the final horn and their season ending until a miraculous goal and then a Double-OT winner that sent the city into delirium. Toronto media believes the Maple Leafs are Florida’s equal and are glossing over the flashing red lights, and our Colorado colleague comes out swinging after the Avalanche again lost to Dallas.
I feel bad for St. Louis, but the city of Winnipeg really, really needed that win. So very badly. They’ve earned that joy.
I’m going to tell a personal story, and if you’re one of the people who do this, please know that I don’t have money, but what I have is a particular set of skills.
Typically, I go to my local little spot on Sunday nights after I’ve taped the TV show, and we all watch and make fun of my performance or debate. In honor of May the Fourth, we instead watched Return of the Jedi (There is but one Return, and it’s not of the King but of the Jedi). Then, someone introduced us to the Kurosawa way to watch the prequels. It’s genius: You turn your TV to black and white and watch the movie in Japanese with English subtitles. It fixes the wooden acting, especially in Eps 1 and 2, and even Jar-Jar is tolerable. It’s quite epic, I think.
However, in the small group gathered, three people thought this Kurusawa method was both a great thing to see, but also pressing the play button meant it was time to have a nattering, superfluous conversation at the top of their lungs. They not only endlessly talked over the movie but also over themselves. The torture ended only when I joylessly guzzled my remaining Guinness like a heathen on spring break and bolted, the unwilling victim of a felonious ear assault. I can only assume these are the same kind of animals who take center seats at a Super Bowl party and wait for kickoff to talk about everything other than the game. So, I have a public service announcement.
LEARN WHEN TO SHUT UP!
If you’re one of those people who doesn’t see anything wrong with a conversation over the game or the movie, please know that I’ve prayed to our creator for another circle of hell as revenge.
Now to hockey.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Sidney Crosby and Nate MacKinnon aren’t done playing hockey this season and want another go-round playing beside each other. They’re almost assured gold as they opted to head to the Worlds for Team Canada.
Dave Molinari took the Penguins’ coaching search as a moment to rank the Top 5 Penguins coaches.
PHN+: The questions came in all weekend, and I had several more to get to, but the column was getting too long. So, we’re doing a Live Chat today at 1 p.m., just for subscribers. I’ll make a post here after noon, and the video will be visible when you log in. In the printed Q&A, we touched on Evgeni Malkin’s future, Mike Sullivan’s departure, fixing the defense, and trade scenarios. I wrote a few things that I can’t write for the gen pop. Here’s the PHN+ Penguins Q&A.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now: Things are going from bad to worse at PNC Park. Now, even one of the bright spots is dimming for the hapless, hopeless Pittsburgh Pirates.
One day apart. Vladislav Kolyachonok had a baby a few days ago, too:

NHL Rumors, News, & National Hockey Now
Sportsnet: God bless ya, Winnipeg. The city went bonkers when Cole Perfetti capped the late comeback and went into the emotional stratosphere with the winner. The video will remind you why you love sports.
Colorado Hockey Now (+): Wow, our people took off the gloves. Dallas beat Colorado in Game 7. It was a hard-fought series between a pair of Cup contenders, but the Avs are 0-4 in series against Dallas under Jared Bednar. Aarif Deen writes that general manager Chris MacFarland went for it with risky trades, but failed, and should pay for it with his job. Denver is roiling after the Colorado Avalanche’s failure.
Philly Hockey Now: What exactly would the perfect offseason look like for the orange and black? Will James dives into the pool with both feet. From the coach to the changes, what the Philadelphia Flyers need.
TSN: It’s a big day in the trial of the 2018 members of Team Canada charged with sexual assault. I was unaware of the connection, but Boris Katchouk of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins testified Friday as a witness. Afterward, the accuser, known as E.M., began her testimony in a remote room on Friday and will continue testifying today.
The prosecution is methodically setting the stage and situation. That night, Katchouk testified that McLeod called him into the hotel room before any assault took place, and testified that McLeod offered him a sex act with the woman. He declined and left the room a couple of minutes later.
Back to hockey.
TSN Video: There is plenty of chatter about the Toronto vs. Florida Round Two battle. The Toronto hockey media might be a little blinded by the light, including this debate. Who has the edge in net, Florida or Toronto?
Seriously? Anthony Stolarz or Sergei Bobrovsky. Who has the edge?!
Florida Hockey Now: A smart piece here from our colleagues in Florida. The Panthers have a secret weapon that’s not so secret anymore. They begin their analysis with the silent assassin, Eetu Luostarinen.
Boston Hockey Now: OK, Boston missed out on hometown boy Mike Sullivan. So, where do they go from here, and who should be next on the shortlist for the Boston Bruins?
If FLA is stupid and takes a lot of penalties, the Leafs will make them pay. Series will be closer than most predict.
FLA in 6. It’s TOR, they don’t see the Conference Final.
The Panthers took plenty of stupid penalties vs Tampa, it’s just that half of them weren’t called. The Lightning were also 2/18 on the PP while the Panthers were 4/15. Until the Leafs prove us wrong, it’s Panthers in 6/7.
Ding-ding-ding-ding!
This is how the league can manipulate outcomes.

So happy for Winnipeg. Had they not won, how much blame would have gone on Hellebuyck for letting in a couple goals he should have stopped? If he lets those in against Dallas, it will be a short series. I HATE Colorado for losing to Dallas. Not a Avalanche fan, but I hate Dallas for moving a team from a hockey hotbed to Dallas. MacKinnon is playing in the worlds for two reasons. A chance to play with Sid on the world stage Pleading with Dubas to bring him to Pittsburgh – That’s what I heard from my father’s brother’s… Read more »
Pure Magic in Winnipeg. They did need that win, made for the most exciting Game 7 so far; Even tops Rantanen’s revenge performance in Dallas. Would have really screwed up my bracket since I have WPG beating the Caps in the SCF. MacKinnon looked out of sorts after the DAL lost – certainly some changes coming in COL. They are again up against the cap with Landeskog back. It would be nice to hear some MacKinnon to PIT rumors, instead of Crosby to COL for a change.
What a couple of absolutely insane game 7s. Rantanen gets his revenge. At the start of the year, who would’ve thought that he’d end up in that situation? The Jets came down to the wire, an absolutely valiant effort to win that one. I would’ve been perfect in my first round predictions, but Rantanen just had to will Dallas over the Avs
Dan, do you think there would be any interest in EK65 from Tampa Bay?
Oh Canada! Our home and native land! True Patriot love in all of us command…
Let’s go Maple Leafs and Jets!
Best wishes in NY, Sully!
Hockey playoffs are the best of any sport, though they are much more fun when the Pens are in them.
Not a Leafs fan but I think they will shock the hockey world this time.
I hope so. I rooted for Florida last year. Will switch it up this year.
The referees will decide which team wins the series. Call it by the book, it’s the TMLHC. “Let them play”, it’s Florida.

What’s up with the Giant Squirrel thing on here?
