The NHL Player Safety Department announced Tuesday that Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin has been fined $5,000 for high-sticking Ottawa’s Jean-Gabriel Pageau.

The fine is the maximum allowable under the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

The incident happened late in Tuesday’s 5-2 win against the Senators at PPG Paints Arena. There was a wrestling scrum along the end boards. Malkin and Pegeau were two of those involved. Malkin ended up on his back on the ice.

Just as the officials were breaking things up, Pageau gave Malkin a shove to the side of the head as Malkin was getting up. Malkin reacted by swinging his stick, hitting Pageau in the neck.

Pageau was fined $2,500 for roughing Malkin, the Player Safety Department announced.
