EDMONTON, Alberta — We’re a little late on the Daily today as we’re a couple of hours back in the Mountain time zone, and those 4 a.m. local alarms aren’t so attractive when the Penguins don’t practice until 4:30 p.m. ET. In the off-day blog, we believed an inside look at the Pittsburgh Penguins and who is scouting them. Elsewhere in the Daily, Barry Trotz explained why there are no NHL trade rumors right now, Alex Ovechkin is getting closer to Wayne Gretzky’s goal record, should the Edmonton Oilers begin to panic after a brutal start and the Toronto media is helping the Maple Leafs panic after more of the same.

I do like Edmonton. There is plenty of Asian food, fun little bars and hangouts, and comfort food.

This is just one street leading to the arena. Quite frankly, it’s the most underrated NHL city, and the arena area is quite a bit ahead of Pittsburgh. Many cities hope to achieve the blend of the “arena district” into the natural city, but few do.

It’s not a rich city, and there are some problems, but it’s a good place to spend a few days on a hockey road trip. And I can get a steak dinner with two glasses of wine for $45 CDN.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Let’s dig into the Penguins’ biggest problems—the who is a bit shocking, but the solutions very well might rest with GM Kyle Dubas. The problems, who is scouting the Penguins, and solutions. The off-day Penguins blog.

They said it. The Penguins locker room was not a happy place despite earning a point in Calgary. The boys could feel the same-old-same-old issues creeping back, and there were no positives to spin. For the raw video and the full context, go inside the Penguins locker room.

Steelers Now: What the ever-loving…?! The Pro Football Hall of Fame snubbed him for years, and now he’s getting worse treatment by the Veterans Committee. L.C. Greenwood screwed over again.

(No) NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now

Sportsnet: Why there are no trade rumors, Kirill Kaprizov on the Hart watch, and the inner workings of the early season NHL. The Utah Hockey Club has been gutted by injuries to defensemen, including a long-term injury to John Marino. Here are 32 Thoughts.

Philly Hockey Now: It was an amazing comeback—epic, actually—but it fell short. The Washington Capitals held on somehow in a wild game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

New Jersey Hockey Now: It’s not been a good start for the Penguins’ Metro Division rivals. What is the concern-o-meter saying for the New Jersey Devils?

The same goes for a couple of other teams, including tomorrow’s Penguins opponent, the Edmonton Oilers.

TSN Video: Connor McDavid is struggling to score, and the Oilers are stacking some losses early in the season. Unfortunately, you can’t take two aspirin and eat some greasy food to get over a Stanley Cup loss hangover. Is it time for the Oilers to panic?

The same questions go for the Maple Leafs, but there’s no hangover; it’s just the carryover from seasons of playoff failures, soft play, and disappointment. Same old Leafs?

Sportsnet video: More goals for Alex Ovechkin. Can he catch Wayne Gretzky this season?

Now for the former Penguins recap.

Pro Hockey Rumors: The Tampa Bay Lightning placed Conor Sheary on waivers. And Justin Schultz gave up the ghost of getting an NHL contract this season. He put his name on paper in the Swiss league.

Hockey Now is hiring a new Washington writer. Our last one wasn’t working out, and it was best for him to try a new career. So, we’re looking for writers in Vegas, Vancouver, and Washington.
