Sidney Crosby Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins continue a string of games at home tonight as the New York Islanders skate into town.

Let’s take a look at this Eastern Division showdown in our Islanders vs. Penguins betting preview with odds, picks and predictions.

Islanders vs. Penguins Betting Pick

The Penguins picked up a 4-0 victory on Thursday against the Sabres. Forward Jared McCann scored a pair of power-play goals while Sidney Crosby recorded three assists. Casey DeSmith made 36 saves to earn his second shutout.

With the victory, the Pens are now just four points behind the Islanders, who lead the Eastern Division with 48 points.

New York enters this game on a three-game winning streak, posting an impressive 12-2 run over its last 14 games. That streak includes a 5-1 mark in its last six road contests.

Forwards Brock Nelson and Jean-Gabriel Pageau have a combined 23 goals and 19 assists, leading the way offensively since Anders Lee tore his ACL over two weeks ago.

Bets We Like With a Penguins Win

Penguins Team Total OVER 3 Goals (+130, BetMGM)

While we saw Pittsburgh feast on the worst team in the league in Buffalo for two games, the Pens must now look to keep the offense rolling against an Islanders club that has allowed three goals or less in nine of its last ten games.

Barry Trotz clubs are always defensively oriented — sometimes to a fault. Occasionally, the Islanders get so caught up in protecting their zone that they neglect chances to create offensive chances.

Pittsburgh will pressure this defense. If it finds a way to score three or more goals, the Penguins should wrap up a victory tonight.

Bets We Like With an Islanders Win

Jean-Gabriel Pageau to Score a Goal Anytime (+225, DraftKings)

The 28-year-old veteran is having a solid first year in New York with 11 goals and 12 assists.

The forward will have to increase his offensive production to make up for the loss of Anders Lee, especially on the power play. Pageau has five goals and three assists in 21 career games against Pittsburgh. Given what should be a game that provides Pageau with some scoring chances, I like for him to net one tonight.

Bets We Like Independent of the Outcome

Game to End in a Tie After Regulation (+310 at DraftKings)

Five of the last nine meetings between the Islanders and Penguins have gone to overtime, with six of the last eight meetings being decided by just one goal.

These two clubs play somewhat opposite styles, with New York a more defensive-minded squad and Pittsburgh utilizing its offensive skill and speed.

As the numbers show, these clubs often play tight, making the regulation draw a solid betting option this evening.

Islanders vs. Penguins Prediction

These two teams are both playing solid winning hockey right now. I anticipate another tough battle in this one, but I’ll side with the Penguins picking up a 4-3 shootout victory.
