CRANBERRY — The Pittsburgh Penguins will start the NHL regular season without forward Kevin Hayes.

Defenseman Ryan Graves checked Hayes hard into the boards on Thursday, on Day 1 of the Penguins’ training camp. Hayes left practice and did not return. Friday, coach Dan Muse updated Hayes’s status.

Hayes will be out for at least a month with an upper-body injury. He’ll be re-evaluated in a month.

Hayes is one of more than 20 forwards battling for a Penguins roster spot. Last season, Hayes had 23 points (10-13-23) in 64 games.

The Penguins have seven regular-season games before Oct. 19. If placed on long-term injured reserve, a player must miss 10 games and 24 days of the season. However, teams cannot place players on LTIR until the start of the season.
