Penguins Blog: Sullivan Calls Out Biggest Problem; What Will Dubas Do?

One year ago, the Pittsburgh Penguins made a furious late season run for the final playoff spot that nearly made history. In the rearview mirror of their season, the enormity of their power play failures was so great that merely upgrading to a bad man-advantage would have punched a ticket to the postseason.
What took that team so long to saddle up and play with passion and intensity is another matter, one that is directly germane to this year’s team.
Sure, the Penguins got plenty of power-play goals this year and will finish with a top-10 unit. That wasn’t the problem. They killed enough penalties to be at least average and will finish mid-pack. That’s not the problem, either.
The Penguins’ offensive output was a bit soft. With 238 goals, the team ranks ninth in the Eastern Conference. It’s not a good total, but neither is it a bad one.
The Penguins’ downfall begins with goals allowed. The team defended like a turnstile of the New York City subway system, allowing the second-most goals in the league (291). Goaltending, specifically Tristan Jarry, compounded matters for the first several months of the season, too.
But the problem ran deeper than poor defending or poor goaltending.
Actually, the Penguins’ goaltending has been greatly improved over the past few months. First, Alex Nedeljkovic seized the net with stellar play after the team waived Jarry and rookie Joel Blomqvist waved at pucks.
Then, serendipity smiled on Jarry as he got a second chance and grabbed the net beginning on March 9. Whether coach Mike Sullivan will admit it or not (he did not), he gave Jarry a center stage audition to save his career. Jarry admitted to Pittsburgh Hockey Now that the last couple of months of this season were, in fact, a tryout.
He passed, but the remarkable thing is that his numbers post-recall are only marginally better than his numbers before the professional embarrassment of being waived and passing through waivers unclaimed. His season save percentage is only .892, but as Sullivan angrily quipped Sunday, “We had one guy. Period. I thought our goaltender was terrific.”
There are more teams in the mediocre goaltending category than not. So, one cannot say that the Penguins are much different in this department from most of their competitors.
With the totality of the evidence now becoming clearer, it wasn’t goaltending that was the trap door of the 2024-25 season. No, they did not build on last year’s galvanizing run; instead, the Penguins reverted back to their worst habits and uninspired play.
The biggest problem was clearly articulated by Sullivan Sunday evening following a pathetic 4-1 loss to the also hapless Boston Bruins at PPG Paints Arena.
“I think it boils down to a conscious choice that you make and if you’re committed to playing defense. And then it’s about details. And when we are at our best and we’re capable,” said Sullivan. “I think it was a collective effort and a commitment to play the game the right way (when we were playing well earlier in the season). I think that’s a conscious choice. That’s an attitude. And that’s the decision that players make.”
The Penguins lack a commitment to the hard things in the hockey game. Not only is the team melting butter soft, but they are lackadaisical to the point of apathy behind the blue line.
Mistakes happen. Repeated mistakes are a problem. Consistent mistakes are no longer mistakes and go far deeper.
The Penguins didn’t bother to defend Sunday, just as they haven’t bothered to defend with any desire or intensity for so many games before it.
The game Sunday was between two teams with only pride to display and no other motivation but the many before that. This team’s defining characteristics are its free skates in January, tepid zone coverage in February, and timid defense in March.
They have too many players that are not very good in the defensive zone (defensemen included), but the bigger problem is that it looks and now sounds like they don’t really want to defend. They have a mindset to just get it over with, like a visit to the proctologist.
Yet that distaste for defense is not overwhelmed by offensive production.
No, at this point in the Penguins’ life cycle, Sullivan merely admitted the obvious and added a frustrated coach’s perspective. His team has made a conscious decision not to defend, which merely exacerbates their lack of talent for the job.
Simply, the team lacks honest players who are willing to put in honest efforts.
That’s partly on Sullivan. Ultimately, it is the coach’s job to cajole the team to play in all three zones. However, no coach on the planet could consistently get this group to buy into hard defending—perhaps no deity could, either.
The bigger fault lies upon Dubas. That part should have been obvious when putting the team together. Add Erik Karlson to Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang? Uh, give it a try. Then add Philp Tomasino, Kevin Hayes, and even Matt Grzelcyk, who isn’t a great defender, to the great melting pot.
Dubas had no reason to expect anything more than what we’ve seen. Defenseman Luke Schenn had no interest in joining this band of defensive scallywags who give out pucks like candy at a fireman’s parade.
Since Dubas is pivoting toward a future focus, we can expect a couple of subpar teams over the next few years. But if Dubas isn’t going to surround Sidney Crosby with talent for the final years of his career, the least he must do is provide more honest players, those who will take pride in defending.
Though it is fun to watch Erik Haula and Fabian Lysell get breakaway goals, the Penguins allow multiple unfiltered rushes in so many games.
Five of the seven Penguins’ defensemen are contractually obligated to return to the scene of the crimes next season. Karlsson, Letang, the appropriately criticized Ryan Graves, and Ryan Shea are under contract. Conor Timmins is a restricted free agent, and it’s the team’s choice. Only Matt Grzelcyk and P.O Joseph are free agents.
And the only prospect who is a lock to make the team next year is Owen Pickering.
As several readers and postgame video viewers pointed out, Sullivan’s postgame comments were a lighter version of the same comments that capped John Tortorella’s tenure in Philadelpha.
Sullivan called out his team’s greatest flaw: Their lack of desire (or ability) to defend. So, what is Dubas going to do about it? And then, interestingly, what is Sullivan going to do about that?
The Penguins’ silly season begins this week, though it doesn’t seem so silly.
Every year since the 2017 cup, this team has gotten worse. Lost to the Caps in 6, swept by NYI, lost 3-1 to the Canadiens during Covid, lost in 6 to NYI again, blew a 3-1 lead to NYR, missed playoffs by a point, missed playoffs by 3 points, and now eliminated weeks before playoffs. The Caps won the cup. The NYI team that swept the Pens was better than the Covid Canadiens and the 2021 NYI team. Blowing a 3-1 lead to the Rangers (even if Sid was hurt) was the extra nail in the coffin. The team is… Read more »
Add Malkin and Letang to your list. Not caring, bad defense, bad body language, taking stupid penalties, and temper tantrums are all seen by the other players and rubs off on them. This has been going on for years.
A coach that doesn’t hold veterans accountable
Yep. Lazy play has no consequence.
Or give young players a real chance. In an interview a few weeks ago Sully addressed the issue of developing young players & he said his distaste for it wasn’t true, he gave a few examples of his & all was pre 2019, which just so happens when he should’ve entered the hot seat & fired years ago.
Agree the rest of the league has fire coaches for poor performance
McGroarty and Koivunen got called up and Sullivan immediately put them on the top 2 lines and the powerplay. They played well and stayed in those roles. Blomqvist was called up and got starts, but played poorly and was given fewer starts and then sent back to the minors. Other guys are fringe NHL prospects so they don’t get top 6 minutes handed to them.
Correct, but you can’t exclude Karlsson who Sullivan coddles. He may have less time with the Pens but he making up for with ( lack of) effort.
Yea agree look at the last game the point took the shoot got the puck to bounce off the pads right infant of the goal. The Russian Figure Skater Malkin skates right pass the puck. Even Mike Rupp suggested Malkin should of stopped and captured the puck. All Malkin does is skate around on circles. Then he stops at the point and never goes to the front of the net. This team is soft and getting old time for a major change
SPOT ON BROTHER!!!!
Exactly! Keep Sully, keep losing. The BS that no coach could do better is just that, BS!
Agree. Three straight yrs missing the playoffs and each time they gotten worse. Just missing by a point. The missing it again by a small margin and now not even close. This team never improved under Sullivan regime. They all were stuck in the yr 2019
Totally agree. It all started after the 2017 season. Sullivan is trying to coach this team like they are still in the yr 2017. Sullivan’s tenure time is up
It won’t happen, but suit up EK65 and send him out for zero shifts. Or bring up as many other bodies as you can and scratch 65, 58, and all the rest for the final game.
Or just send out the same 6 and complain that they don’t care enough. It’s odd how all the players in the NHL who don’t seem to care play in PGH. But maybe that’s just me.
Sully NEVER scratches a vet or even reduces their ice time. He is responsible for the style of play!
If Dubas wants a chance at Makenna keep the core defenseman group, if not clean house which due to contracts is going to be a challenge.
Teflon Mike’s high dudgeon is laughable. Over the past 7 years, the team has consistently eroded in step-wise fashion through 3 different GMs. At some point, either Teflon Mike needs to own the steady deterioration and is the wrong coach OR Dubas and his horn-rimmed glasses aren’t as smart about roster management as he needs to be OR both. We’re going into year 3 under Dubas. Does he have a clue about how to build a d corps? Does Teflon Mike know anything about a good defensive system? This off-season will be most telling in a lot of ways. If… Read more »
Right all 3 must go! SULLY MUST GO!!!
If Sully is still coach on 4/18 NOTHING will be different next year.
Well said. Too many offensive minded players on both offense and defense. I like him and want him to stay but an early season comment from Rust is a clue to team attitude.. guys hit you like were going into the playoff run and it’s only October..
Yea agree. Karlsson and Letang are like twin brothers. Born from the same cloth. Both play the same pinch at the wrong time can’t defend and to slow to get back on defense
On a side note, I wonder what everyone would have done/said if we got Thatcher Demko last year or the year before?
It is easy to defecate on Jarry. Yet despite his horrendous play through much of the season and Ned’s “stellar” play, their season stats are basically identical in terms of GAA and SV%. These two goalies won’t take this team far, nor will this AHL-caliber defense. Dubas has his work cut out for him.
We’re all adults here. You could say poo.
I didn’t know. I’m not giving up on Blomqvist, and we all know Murashov isn’t far away. I also feel like Jarry is fine when he doesn’t give up the early goals. The talent’s there. It really is the D. I’m definitely all for moving EK if we can. Even if that means eating some cap. I like Dan’s idea from yesterday about trying something like Graves for Kreider (Kreider had speed, meet front presence, and it’s still a very good winger who will help us with a third line, whereas Graves brings nothing) Letang isn’t a problem if you… Read more »
Both Letang and EK are significant problems because neither will consistently provide defensive support due to both age and mentality.
Jarry redeemed himself. Sullivan should have held everyone accountable. Not just a selective few. Time for a reset and change up.the coaching staff
The problem remains 65,58 and 71. None of them have any interest in the defensive aspect of the game. Sadly all 3 will be back next season as we will continue to discuss why this team sucks. Sid’s not entirely absolved. As captain sometimes you have to speak up and hold others accountable. Yeah he leads by example on the ice, but that needs to resonate in the locker room too. He’s too nice of a guy to jump on any of his buddies lackadaisical attitude. It’s a make or break off season for Dubas in correcting the shit show… Read more »
I ve said it before. A new voice in the Locker room is what’s needed. The leaders need to lead by example. Hard work, disciplined play, and even physicality. It rubs off to the younger. Geno, please retire. 16 goals, soft serve soft, bad defensive zone coverage, and just absurdly bad penalties.
Yet no repercussions from Sully(no missed shifts, no less PP time, etc.). there is NO accountability, unless of course you are a rookie and make ONE mistake!!!
With regards to Geno? That would never happen. There are so many Malkin appolgists out there. You can’t say one negative, or you will gat chatstised! The local media and fans are still living in the past. “Geno machio” is hilarious. He shows up 1x every 10 games.
Exactly. 16 G for a Pens 2C is unacceptable.
Have you seen his linemates?
Yes I have. Have you seen his play?
A new coach is what is needed!
Offer those three to any team they want to join play for and then make it happen financially with the Pens taking back as much salary of the three (or two) which makes it work.
I’d welcome Geno at Letang home, happily, for their retirement ceremonies, if they choose to go elsewhere fo the next season!!
You’re correct but hey 71/58 got their wish so now the team pays the price
The lack of talent in the NHL really shows with the Pens. All of the lousy defensemen that have passed through the team. The fact that there are just a handful of good goalies and good teams in the league is bad news. Can’t wait for the final team attendance numbers to see if there is a decline. The decline in the product on the ice is obvious to me.
More expansion teams should help
I didn’t think the situation is as dour as it seems. Not even for next season. Adding McGroarty and Koivunen will help with energy and both have some grit and are decent defensively given how young they are. The team has money to spend to put together more offense and find some 2 way forwards. With that money, and if they aren’t able to trade Graves (I still really like Graves + a pick for Kreider), they can afford to make him the 7th D next season and upgrade in 2 spots. Ideally, the team trades EK no matter what… Read more »
Are you being serious about Luke Schenn not wanting to play here b/c he didn’t want to be part of a bad defense?
Good point, was that actually said?
Now that Half Season Jarry has played decently since his return, it’s time once again to put him on the trade market and get him out of here over the summer along with number of other players. I wouldn’t displeased if both Letang and Karlsson were dealt as well.
Good blog Dan. I think your analysis and comments are pretty much on. That being said, if we’re gonna solve the ethos problem, it’s gonna take a wholesale cleaning not just a few good pick ups. we’re gonna need leadership to model the attitude and defensive grit that we’re talking about. And we must assume it’s not here now. KD has some significant challenges in the off-season.
“That’s partly on Sullivan.” Yeah, the largest part. “The bigger fault lies upon Dubas.” I’m gonna say absolutely not. The problem was here before Dubas got here, and remains today. The Penguins used up their asset pool to win back to back Cups. Since then, they haven’t had the assets to trade or cap space to sign the right players. That problem isn’t going away until this team looks in the mirror and accepts that it is time to reset. No extension for Malkin, move Letang and Karlsson if there are any takers, and start pivoting. As for Sullivan…it will… Read more »
Exactly! Keep Sully, keep losing! Shall we go for 14 years with no playoff series win?
Sulli should be canned and they shouldve traded Letang right after the 2017 cup. They won it without him.
Off subject but any reason for sending Murashov to Wheeling now? So he can play every playoff game? Looks like Larsson and Bloom for WBS in playoffs.
All Sully has to do to see the biggest problem is look in the mirror.
NOHING will change until they FIRE SULLY.
It comes down to defense and golal tending. Go back rso when we won the first cup first cup with mario. We had physical defenseman. The last two cups defense first d men. Most Stanley cup championship games are low. Scoring defense and good goal t ending it starts there. This must change with this group We need bigger, more physical defense.Men and taller goal tenders and then we’ll be back.
It won’t be that easy. Crosby only has a couple of years left and Malkin should retire now. That’s two huge holes to fill compared to where the team was 5+ years ago. We also don Have the leadership or net presence that existed when Hornqvist was here nor the speed etc that Sullivan seems to need for being successful.
The team takes on the personality of the coaching staff, flatlined, unemotional, without an edge. This describes Sullivan and staff. We say at times the team seems uninterested, well without emotion that’s the appearance the team takes on. Definitely time for a chan behind the bench.
You’re saying Mike Sullivan is not emotional?
That’s exactly what I’m saying. Gets pissed off at officials on bad calls, yes. Ripping new assholes when his team is shitting the bed, never. Needs to call them out, challenge them and not make general statements about defending when everyone damn well knows his 2017 system doesn’t employ the type of defense required to win in 2025 and beyond.
You would be very mistaken. It’s only to the media that he will not call them out (often).
When is the last time a vet was scratched or benched? No accountability .
NEW COACHING STAFF PLEASE! IT”S TIME DUBAS!
You have 3 contracts you can retain. I would retain as much as $5M on Karlsson. It is only 2 years, and surely you can get something for him at $5M a year. The only other one I would consider retaining salary on is Graves, even for 4 years. We should be able to move him if you retained $1.5M or attached a 3rd-round pick. I would make acquiring Byram my top priority. I would also offer sheet Struble at $1.6M for 2 or 3 years. Byram & Brunike would be my PP QBs. Byram – Brunike Pickering – Letang… Read more »
If you go to puckpedia.com, under PuckGM, other “armchair” GMs submit trades, signings, etc.(And people can comment on them). I am surprised that quite a few “teams” have an interest in Graves, mostly the Islanders and Rangers.
Karlsson has to either learn to defend first then committ to offense second. Or move on to someone else. Letang’s career is done. He needs to retire or go play for Montreal were he’s from. Cut P.O. Joseph no idea why they would bring him back. They got rid if him the first time because of his poor play. Ryan Graves just plain sucks he should just stay in the defensive zone and neither trying to play offense. Bring in all the young defenseman from Wilkes-Barre and make and teach them to play defense first then offense second. If this… Read more »
