Dan’s Daily: Latest Karlsson & Kane Trade Talk, Penguins Injury Updates
The big wheels of the NHL trade deadline are ready to turn, and the carousel music is beginning to play. The Jakob Chychrun deal is imminent. The Edmonton Oilers are chasing Erik Karlsson. Old Buddy Mark Lazerus reports four teams are banging on Chicago’s door for Patrick Kane. And Dave Molinari has the latest on the Pittsburgh Penguins from somewhere in California.
Oh goody, it’s Valentine’s day. The nice thing about streaming shows and movies more than watching cable is the lack of sappy jewelry commercials. But watches are on sale, so hide my wallet from me. Thanks.
Coincidentally, I just started “You” on Netflix. It’s a bit Dexter-ish and, at times, feels a little derivative, but it’s also really good. I’ll be traveling a good bit in March, so I’m accepting nominations for my next series. Amazon’s The Hunters S2 lost me about 15 minutes into Ep. 1. It felt like starting a conversation mid-sentence, so I put it down.
Anyway…
Pittsburgh Penguins:
From El Segundo (where the Penguins practiced Monday) — Tristan Jarry is a maybe, but Mark Friedman is injured. Here’s the latest from Penguins practice.
If you’re so inclined–Alby Oxenreiter and I went one-on-one on Final Word. We had a good 10 minutes talking about the Penguins’ toughness, trade targets, and priorities. Check it out — WPXI Final Word.
Yes, I had a momentary freakout when I found out I was the only panelist. In a radio studio, that’s MY turf. I could roll out of bed and do four hours. But TV isn’t yet my wheelhouse. If you watched the first segment, you could see my eyes dart around the studio, looking for my camera and cues. Alby is such a steady pro. He knew when to pick me up and when to let me run.
NHL Trade Talk, Playoff Race, & National Hockey Now
First, the NHL trade “rumors,” but the Jakob Chychrun stuff is still at the goal line without lighting the lamp. I’ve seen a few deals collapse here. Let’s see…
OilersNation: Erik Karlsson to the Oilers is the hot new NHL trade rumor. Multiple outlets have differing angles of coverage. Four more years with an $11.5 million cap hit is a hefty salary. The Oilers are certainly trying. Here is the latest.
San Jose Hockey Now: Karlsson hears the rumors, and it’s not always easy to compartmentalize. San Jose Sharks locker room.
The Athletic $: Our buddy Mark Lazerus reports that four teams are interested in Patrick Kane, including the Carolina Hurricanes. The NHL trade chatter around Kane.
Penguins Playoff Race:
Florida Hockey Now: The Panthers picked up an extra point and are now in hot pursuit of the Penguins and Capitals. They’re just two points back of Washington with one game in hand. The Florida Panthers beat Minnesota.
Florida is the only wild-card contender with at least six wins in their last 10 games.
Washington Hockey Now: The inconsistent Capitals beat the Bruins but then tanked against the Sharks. What did that loss show us regarding the Washington Capitals’ trade deadline plans?
NYI Hockey Now: Coach Lane Lambert talked about his grilling practice. He put the boys through an intense and physical workout because they weren’t very intense or physical over the weekend. There’s a sense of urgency with the New York Islanders.
NHL.com: The Buffalo Sabres met a similar fate as the Penguins when they faced the LA Kings Tuesday. LA claimed a 4-0 lead after two periods, and Buffalo remained five back of the Penguins.
Philly Hockey Now: Three roster moves, including recalling Keifer Bellows, for the Philadelphia Flyers.
