Dan’s Daily: Trade Market Watch List, Fixing Penguins’ Power Play

Published

on

Pittsburgh Penguins, Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin, NHL news

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ power play needs a boost, and Jason Zucker is the class cutup. We have all of the stuff from the road trip. The Penguins also extended their trip by a day and put the human side above hockey. The team ended a 10-day road trip by flying to Montreal instead of Pittsburgh to be with Kris Letang in his time of grief. Also in the Daily, Sportsnet looked at the 20 names you’ll get tired of hearing about as the NHL trade deadline nears. The young Canadiens got booed in their building for a flatline effort. And Tom Wilson turned down a fight.

It was weird waking up in my own recliner instead of a needless King size bed. There’s no breakfast or buffet downstairs waiting for me to finish writing. Instead, there is a pile of laundry and an extra layer of dust on my TV. And there wasn’t a restaurant open when I finally arrived home last night. Thank you to everyone who subscribed during the road trip! Those things get expensive, even when I eat $1.99 hot dogs. I hope we’ve earned your support. No other outlet can say they have covered every game and every practice this season. Join PHN+ and keep this train rolling!

Pittsburgh Penguins / Steelers, Pirates

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Fix the power play? Dave Molinari writes — try changing the personnel. Penguins analysis.

I began writing a column about Jason Zucker’s contract. I quickly realized I was writing an inside piece about Zucker and the locker room. All of the stuff — Funny (crap) Jason Zucker says (and does).

The Athletic($): I’ll give a hat tip to colleague Josh Yohe. He got the scoop. The Penguins flew to Montreal instead of Pittsburgh Sunday night to be with Kris Letang.

Steelers Now:

It was a news purge– go to SteelersNow.com for EVERYTHING. Here are a couple of highlights.

  • Mike Tomlin has NOT made a decision on Matt Canada.
  • What is the future of Cam Heward with the Steelers?
  • Cleveland requested permission to interview Brian Flores for their DC position.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now:

Philly Hockey Now: Ivan Provorov is on the NHL trade block.

Sportsnet: The 20 names you’ll get sick of hearing, and the NHL rumor mill will have a billion “I’m hearing that…” statements. Here we go. It’s officially Silly Season, and these are the 20 impactful names.

Rory Boylen did include one name that I’ve circled for the Penguins. I’m waiting on another shoe to drop first.

Washington Hockey Now: Tom Wilson declined a fight? Yep. He delivered a big hit, then the wave off. Yep, Wilson is back for the Washington Capitals.

NYI Hockey Now: The Penguins leapfrogged the Islanders into a playoff spot again. Stefen Rosner reports Simon Holmstrom is returning to the lineup tonight, which is a big deal for the New York Islanders.

Detroit Hockey Now: Remember the “wow” after Detroit and Washington swapped Anthony Manthan and Jakub Vrana? Doesn’t seem like a big deal anymore, does it? Mantha is in the press box, and Vrana slipped through waivers. It’s no big deal for the Detroit Red Wings.

Colorado Hockey Now: What we’re learning at mid-season about the defending Cup champion Colorado Avalanche.

Stick tap to new CHN beat writer Evan Rawal. He’s been a breath of fresh air with some hella good insider coverage.

Vegas Hockey Now: It lines up – and has in the past — The Chicago Blackhawks could be good trade partners for the Vegas Golden Knights.

Montreal Hockey Now: A no-show loss at home to the Seattle Kraken brought the boobirds for the Montreal Canadiens.
