NHL Punishes Malkin, Zadorov for Bench Incident

Pittsburgh Penguins Evgeni Malkin

The NHL hopes that Evgeni Malkin and Nikita Zadorov learned a lesson Saturday morning. The league issues the maximum $5,000 fine to each for an incident near the end of the first period Friday as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Boston Bruins 2-1 at TD Garden.

With 22 seconds remaining in the period, Boston defenseman Zadorov jabbed Malkin with his stick from the Boston bench. Malkin retaliated with a turning one-handed stick swing, perhaps hitting Zadorov on the helmet.

Referees used video replay to assess Malkin with a two-minute slashing penalty and Zadorov an unsportsmanlike minor penalty.

You can see the incident here.

Neither player will be suspended. Malkin assisted on Philip Tomasino’s game-winning goal in the second period. The Penguins face the Calgary Flames Saturday at PPG Paints Arena at 7 p.m.

Complete BS. Zadorov, on the bench, like a coward, jabs Geno from behind. So what is Geno supposed to do? Smile? I get Geno’s minor, but Zadorov should’ve received a game misconduct and tossed. Then NHL should have done an in person hearing on Zadorov and not fined Geno. Utter BS.

There is no place in hockey for a player on the bench to attack an opponent on the ice, with his back turned! Get on the ice and go face to face with Geno…..if you got the guts!

Awesome analysis right on the money. You won’t get that kind of response on this site. At least not for Geno

Both players got a minor penalty and fined for their actions, the punishment fit the crime. Zadorov may be a coward for poking Geno while he was on the ice, but I wouldn’t call that an attack on Geno. It certainly didn’t warrant a game misconduct lmao

DoPS once again showing they are a joke. Low class punk move from low class punk team and Zadorov doesn’t get suspended which means no punishment at all. And the victim gets the same fine as the offender. Ridiculous.
And the game winning goal was in the 3rd period not the 2nd. C’mon man, get the goals right!

A hit from a player on the bench has always been a minimum of 5 min game misconduct. Refs blew it from the start
