Dan’s Daily: Canucks Refused Silovs Trade to Oilers; Penguins Gone Cold?

Arturs Silovs, Pittsburgh Penguins and NHL Trade Rumors

Before the Pittsburgh Penguins trade for Arturs Silovs from the Vancouver Canucks, the Edmonton Oilers were very interested, but Sirs Rutherford and Allvin flatly refused their attempts. In Penguins land, there is a strong parallel to this summer and the last time Erik Karlsson was on the NHL trade block, but also, we looked at the race to get Sidney Crosby back to the playoffs, and continued our preview of the top 25 Penguins prospects, getting down to the top 10. Elsewhere in the Daily, Porter Martone won’t join the Philly Flyers this year and will play college hockey, there’s some leftover Jason Robertson trade talk, and Kirill Kaprizov contract talks aren’t going so well.

I got a little seat time this weekend, but I didn’t go far (at least by my standards), as I looped around Meadville and down through Titusville. The iPhone really isn’t great for being able to truly capture the depth and distance of some of the views as I head over the mountains, but I find myself forgetting everything else I was thinking as some of the vistas emerge seemingly out of nowhere. Look up to the sky, enjoy the sun, and all is right with the world. This was the view that hit me as too perfect, somewhere around the small Canadohta Lake.

Let’s get to hockey.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The countdown continues, and you realize just how many kids are now in the Penguins’ system. We got to Nos. 10 through six yesterday. In past years, this would have been the top five, and it probably will be the top of the class next year–and truthfully, I could have rearranged the order (and did), and it still would be pretty good. There are big hopes and big needs on the list. Here is the back half of the top 10 Penguins prospects.

In the One-timers column, we’ve begun to notice a couple of parallels between 2023 and 2025, at least as it pertains to Erik Karlsson. We also got real about the push to get Sidney Crosby back into the playoffs. I suppose there are some slapshots to take, from Crosby to the Penguins trade talk.

Anthony Mantha spoke to the Pittsburgh media for the first time Monday. He just found out that his grandfather–who won four Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens–played for the Pittsburgh Hornets. Also, the Penguins tried to sign Mantha before. Here is the full story from the new Penguins winger.

Steelers Now: It’s Latrobe time; an annual tradition that is becoming rare as training camps away from the practice facilities are disappearing across the NFL, except in Pittsburgh. Here are the five battles to watch in Steelers training camp.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

DFO: You watch this chunk of the podcast on X, as Michael Russo reports that the Minnesota Wild and Kiril Kaprizov are not close on a new contract. Uh oh. Kaprizov will become the highest-paid winger in the game, but it’s not done.

Edmonton Journal: Buried in a longer column is the news that Penguins fans will find pertinent. Edmonton really wanted Silovs. Vancouver said no. Vancouver said no, not because of the price, but in fact declined at any price. Vancouver refused to trade the goalie to Edmonton.

The Oilers’ loss is the Penguins’ gain. I will confess to being a little skeptical if Silovs is ready to be a 1A goalie, or even a starter, but it seems others were quite interested.

Philly Hockey Now: I find this news a bit disappointing because it means he won’t be in the NHL this season, but Porter Martone is headed to college to get some Big 10 NIL money and not play for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Florida Hockey Now: Oh, Lord Stanley. The Cup capped a memorable weekend as the Florida Panthers continue to party through the summer. Check out the Cup’s travels in a pretty awesome weekend with Matthew Tkachuk.
