WOW: Vegas Trades Fleury to Chicago…No Salary Hold Back

NHL trade rumors Marc-Andre Fleury

The NHL trade market shocked on Tuesday morning, and it may be the most bitter day in the Vegas Golden Knights’ brief history. One of the most affable, likable players on and off the ice, one of the most successful goaltenders of his generation, and the original franchise face of the Golden Knights is no longer a Golden Knight, but he will not be a Pittsburgh Penguins goalie, either.

UPDATE: The Vegas Golden Knights trade is also eye-popping for its return. Darren Dreger of TSN was the first to report the trade and the contents. Initial reports indicated Vegas traded Fleury to the Chicago Blackhawks for…nothing. Cue the George Costanza memes. However, the updated trade call revealed Chicago traded Mikael Hakkarainen back to Vegas.

Hakkarainen is a player who has split time between the ECHL and AHL and is not considered an NHL prospect.

The Golden Knights will not hold back any salary, but they will essentially get nothing for the 2021 Vezina-winning goalie.

Fleury is the third-winningest goalie of all time and just 60 wins behind Patrick Roy for second place. The three-time Stanley Cup winner was held back as the final and dramatic pick of the 2017 expansion draft as the Pittsburgh Penguins made a side-deal with the Golden Knights to select Fleury.

Fleury, 36, was the Penguins first-round choice and first overall pick in 2003. He won his first Stanley Cup when the Penguins defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 2009 Stanley Cup Final, one year after losing to Detroit.

The goalie was 26-10-0 with six shutouts, and a .928 save percentage last season. His GAA was only 1.98. He appeared in 192 games over four seasons for the Golden Knights with a 117-60-14 record. In his Golden Knights career with a .917 save percentage and 2.41 GAA.

Fleury will join the Chicago Blackhawks, who are also expected to get Jonathan Toews back this season. Toews missed all of last season with a medical condition. Chicago won three Stanley Cups from 2010-2015.

Fleury has one year left on his contract, which carries a $7 million AAV. Fleury and Chicago are the Pittsburgh Penguins opponent for their home opener on Oct. 16.

Perhaps the worst news came from the Athletic’s Jessie Granger, who reports Fleury found out about the trade via Twitter.

Screw Vegas. That is a trash move on the organization. I get that trades happen, but the face of you franchise should not find out he was traded via social media. Absolutely classless Vegas.

DoBoer wasn’t sold on Fleury as his go to goalie. 7 million , 36y/o This was a smart move by Vegas and if Malkin did not have a NMC this is what should have occurred 3 years ago w Pgh. Why didn’t Fleury negotiate a NMC?

Don’t try to trade for Fleury. So sick of this nostalgia proffered by some writers. Sadly Malkin’s trade window is closed , don’t resign him. Time to get younger, bigger, and stronger on the blue line. Having Fleury with a pair like Pettersson and Marino in front of him is useless .

Wow some real garbage takes here. Malkin was still one of the best players on the ice on one leg against nyi. Last year he carried the team on his back for the first 40-50 games. Nobody was beating tampa the last 2 seasons, with or without malkin. This core has earned the right to ride off in the sunset and most of us fans want them to retire as pens. Fluery just won the vezina, so nostalgia has nothing to do with him surely being an upgrade over Jarry. If you can get him at the same cap hit… Read more »

Were they simply dumping salary? No sense otherwise.

They signed Lehner to a nice long term deal. They like Lehners age and at least DeBoer likes Lehner more. Thus need to dump for Cap space. I agree w Vegas although j would have handled it more professionally.

Katz, I think we can all agree that you have more hate for players that won the cup in Pittsburgh in 2009 than you have brains. Are you a closet Red Wings fan? You don’t trade the best goalie in the league (Vezina) so you can start a career journeyman in goal. This is going to blow up in Vegas’s face worse than when the Penguins chose Murray over Fleury.

Katz, a lot of emotion is being thrown out right now and no one wants to hear cap space and common since. This was Vegas tearing off the band-aid and I hear ya. As everyone knows, you, me and anyone with common since it should’ve been handled better.

David it’s all about the Cap in the Covid flat Cap era. That’s why Malkins 9.5 million is an albatross and was mismanaged. There are other contracts that are not good also primarily Zucker and perhaps Mathason . But that 9.5 would surely be nice to have. Toooo late. Pgh snoozed and lost . Hextall is stuck and is doing the right think IMO.

Am I the only one that hopes Fleury retires before playing a game in Chicago just to stick Vegas with the dead Cap hit?

I’d love to see him end up back in Pittsburgh somehow. Highly unlikely though. However, That would also be nice to see. Fuck everything about Vegas. I’m so glad Flower is gone from there so I can fully hate them without any guilt about Fleury.

I’m selling my Golden Knights season tickets! This is the most Bull Shit move in Hockey History! Just because Deboer and Lehner are sucking each other’s dick! That BS coach needs to go to!

What i would like to have explained is how was he traded to a team not on his approved trade list and without his consent? SUPER confusing. My initial thought was that he was going to Chicago, they were going to retain salary and then send him elsewhere. Unfortunately, it seems like Vegas just straight up screwed over the face of their franchise.
