Dan’s Daily: Biggest NHL Upsets Ever, Retooling the Penguins

Published

NHL trade chatter, Boston Bruins upset, Stanley Cup playoff upsets, Pittsburgh Penguins retool

We saw not only one historic upset but a pair of them Sunday night. We haven’t seen so many stunners since Stone Cold Steve Austin ruled wrestling. The Boston Bruins were the greatest regular-season team ever. They’re gone. Never before had a team won their first-ever playoff series against the defending Stanley Cup champion, yet the Seattle Kraken pulled it off.

The Winnipeg Jets are creating their own NHL trade rumors as more players speak out. The Tampa Bay Lightning will undergo changes. We also looked hard at retooling the Pittsburgh Penguins and Mike Sullivan’s role in the offseason.

What a night of hockey. There’s a National Hockey Now curse this year. We’re down to two teams: Vegas and Florida.

Pittsburgh Penguins / Steelers, Pirates (Sports Now Group)

Wow — Our Pirates site is doubling its readership, and our Steelers site just completed its best week ever. Nearly 100,000 Steelers fans come rolling through on Sunday. Our group with John Perrotto and Alan Saunders is really providing some outstanding stories and moving the needle in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: How the Penguins can get back to the playoffs. And what the Alex Nylander signing says about Mike Sullivan. It’s a deeper read than the headline says. Penguins analysis.

Steelers Now:

Ok, first, a little fun. Kenny Pickett meets country singer Luke Combs, and the Steelers QB chugs beer with Combs. The crowd went nuts.

Believe it or not, Mel Kiper is a fan of the Steelers’ draft

Steelers Now has ALL of the undrafted free agent signings, too. Go to the home page and enjoy.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now:

The Buccos lost Sunday but still won the series with the Washington Nationals. Get the details from the Pirates game.

Ji Wan Bae can’t be stopped. Danny Demillo says he’s perfect for the new game and the new Pittsburgh Pirates.

2020 first-overall pick Henry Davis is hitting homers (6). Get the latest on the Pirates’ prospects.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now:

San Jose Hockey Now: The Sharks admit Erik Karlsson is torn between staying in San Jose and being put him on the NHL trade block.

Winnipeg Sun: A day after Connor Hellebuyck said no to rebuilding, Kyle Connor was equally strident in opposing a rebuid. Cue even more NHL trade chatter.

Montreal Hockey Now: More on trading for Pierre-Luc Dubois. Montreal Canadiens trade chatter.

Calgary Hockey Now: Watch former Flames GM Brad Treliving. He could find several suitors. The Calgary Flames’ former GM will have options.

NHL Playoffs:

Boston Hockey Now: So much went wrong in the playoffs for the greatest regular season team ever. Jimmy Murphy unpacks some of it in Talking Points. The Bruins choked away a 3-1 series lead and a 3-2 third period Game 7 lead. The Boston Bruins lost Game 7 in OT.

I think we’ve seen the last of Patrice Bergeron. He returned to the ice well after the game with tears in his eyes and waved goodbye to the few fans left. He not only had a severe back injury but a herniated disc. Patrice Bergeron was banged up.

Florida Hockey Now: Elation in Florida. Carter Verhaeghe was the playoff hero once again. More coverage from the Florida Panthers’ shocking win.

Colorado Hockey Now: Wow. Seattle upended Colorado in Game 7. The revenge of Grubauer and Game Over for the Colorado Avalanche.

And…the premier Round Two series. Eichel vs. McDavid. The tale of the tape. The Edmonton Oilers vs. the Vegas Golden Knights.
