Dan’s Daily: Guerin Shockers, Landeskog, Capitals & Islanders Rumors

Published

NHL trade, pittsburgh penguins, gabriel landeskog, ryan suter

And away we go. Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin shocked everyone with not just one but two big-time buyouts on Tuesday. Guerin took his medicine on the declining Zach Parise and the very serviceable Ryan Suter as Minnesota will get hammered with dead money. The Calgary Flames and New York Islanders are shaking up the NHL trade market, and we recount those awful expansion draft trades that built the Vegas Golden Knights, including a gaffe by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

There is too much today. Philadelphia Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher went scorched earth in a press conference. The Washington Capitals will kick tires on Suter, Gabriel Landeskog will likely become a free agent, Nashville has too many good defensemen but doesn’t want Seattle to get their expansion hands on them. And more…

I forgot how bad those expansion draft trades were. They’re even worse in hindsight. I don’t expect Ron Francis will get the same generosity.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Recounting the Penguins trade and the other “wow, what were they thinking” trades from the last expansion draft.

Dan on the Radio–I chatted with Paul Zeise on 93-7 the Fan last night. Usually, I don’t post the segments, but this is a good preview of the coming stories today and tomorrow about the Penguins expansion draft plans.

NHL Trade Chatter, News & National Hockey Now network…

By the way, it appears the 11th NHN outlet is on the way. It will be a couple of weeks, but we may cross the Canadian border finally… Wish us luck.

Colorado: Adrian Dater was the first on this biggie. The Colorado Avalanche and captain Gabriel Landeskog are not close to an extension. They are far, far apart, and Landeskog could be a free agent.

NYI: The New York Islanders are aggressively trying to sell so that they can buy. GM Lou Lamoriello must not be happy that others know, but the NHL trade chatter is spinning.

Star Tribune: Michael Russo of the Athletic broke the news that shocked everyone–the Minnesota Wild will buy out Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, despite each having four years remaining on their 13-year-deals. That’s old news today–Minnesota will get CRUSHED on dead money for three years. Here’s what Guerin had to say IF they’ll have more cap space and activity.

Washington: Dater wasn’t done breaking news. He assisted our Sammi Silber in Washington–The Washington Capitals are already interested in Ryan Suter.

Sportsnet: No, Mathew Tkachuk is not available. Nope, no. Stop asking! However, the Calgary Flames may just dangle a couple of other big names on the NHL trade market.

TSN Insiders: Dreger was right behind Dater on the Landeskog stuff, but where the Wild go, and what Nashville does on the NHL trade market or the expansion draft with too many good defensemen on the table.

Ryan Suter and possibly Erik Johnson being available certainly changes the RHD market. That’s good news for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Vegas: What are the odds the Vegas Golden Knights make these five offseason moves, including a Marc-Andre Fleury trade and salary dump?

Philly: “We have a lot of work to do,” Chuck Fletcher said. He didn’t spare the rod or spoil the child in his presser. Changes coming to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Boston: Steve Kampfer said goodbye Boston, hello KHL.

San Jose: The San Jose Sharks re-signed RFA goalie Josef Korenar. And how does THAT affect the expansion draft plans of the Sharks, and maybe the Kraken?

Florida: Joel Quenneville will help the Chicago Blackhawks investigation of the sexual assault, abuse, and misconduct related to a video coach in 2010, which Chicago didn’t report.

Detroit: Just a little icing on the cake and realizing the Detroit Red Wings may have dodged a big headache. Detroit was “in” on the Americans Parise and Suter nine years ago. What if Detroit signed them?
