Dan’s Daily: Avs Need Goalie Trade? Penguins Have Goalie Problem

Published

on

Tristan Jarry, Pittsburgh Penguins trade talk

The headline cites two situations, but there is no credible report linking the two. Colorado Avalanche starting goalie Alexandar Georgiev is floundering, and Pittsburgh Penguins starting goalie Tristan Jarry has been rattled twice in three starts. The Penguins officially have a Jarry problem. We also took a walk with the memories of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. It’s a long way since “Three years, Super League.”

Meanwhile, the New Jersey Devils are benefitting bigly from their goalie trade over the summer. Young Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson played over 30 minutes last night, but Montreal is also getting some immature performances that are starting to draw negative attention. The Philadelphia Flyers–have you ever seen the Flyers win the Cup?–are returning home from their long western road trip without a win after losing in Seattle.

The Penguins are home tonight before we embark on another road trip. We’re headed west through Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver, but the NHL schedule makers, in their infinite wisdom, are giving us only 12 hours in Vancouver and three days in Edmonton. Unlike last year, I won’t be up for 36 hours straight trying to drive from Calgary to Edmonton and back in a snowstorm (spoiler, I didn’t make it, but a nice tow truck driver gave me a ride to Tim Horton’s and an Uber got me to the airport).

On Saturday, I’m going to do our first subscriber-only Q&A—no holds barred. Subscribers will get an email later today to submit their questions. I’ll also make a post on the website. The only thing I ask is that the answers not be shared publicly. It’s for your eyes only.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: I feel like I got this one right. From the scene in the locker room, the Penguins superstars have come a long way since “Three years, Super League.’ The story of the emotional milestone night involving Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

Now, to the transactions.

Penguins GM Kyle Dubas bought a little time to make more decisions or let things play out further on Thursday when the team activated goalie Alex Nedeljkovic, but he won’t play for the Penguins right away.

Nedeljkovic’s activation and assignment only further heightened the tensions surrounding the Penguins goalie situation. Yes, the Penguins officially have a Tristan Jarry problem.

This was not how it was supposed to play out.

NHL Trade Talk, News, Hockey Now

CTV News: There’s another potential bombshell sexual assault allegation against junior hockey players, but again, this report comes past the time that police can do a forensic investigation. A woman recently called Ontario police to report a sexual assault in 2014 perpetrated by eight OHL players. Some details are being withheld right now, but the investigation is beginning.

I fully believe these stories. Throughout my career, I’ve heard too many things that lend credence to these types of allegations.

TSN: Very simply, things are south and going further south in Denver. Many fans are connecting the situation to the Penguins and Jarry, but I think that’s a bit too easy. Do the Colorado Avalanche need a goalie trade?

Philly Hockey Now: The Philly start has been bad, which is good news for the Penguins. Seattle was the latest to tub-thump the Philadelphia Flyers.

New Jersey Hockey Now: As expected, the New Jersey Devils are pretty good. Coach Sheldon Keefe is pushing the right buttons. They won again last night, beating Ottawa, and Jacob Markstrom was superb.

Washington Hockey Now: There was a lot of change in D.C. this summer, just as I suppose there will be a lot of change no matter what happens in November. For now, we’ll both focus on hockey as the new beans are making an immediate impact with the Washington Capitals.

Sometimes the easiest answer is the correct answer. I doubt Jarry’s 12 team M-NTC would hold up a deal; I would think he’d welcome a change of scenery and prefer any NHL club as opposed to Wilkes-Barre. I also can’t imagine he would want to continue playing in PIT. The real challenge will be to find a club that wants 4 more years of Jarry (ok, 3 and some change). On the right team, if Jarry’s play improves, he could be an asset, to say a western conference team. Ultimately for a BOLD season, you need BOLD moves by mgmt… Read more »
