Dan’s Daily: Avs Need Goalie Trade? Penguins Have Goalie Problem

The headline cites two situations, but there is no credible report linking the two. Colorado Avalanche starting goalie Alexandar Georgiev is floundering, and Pittsburgh Penguins starting goalie Tristan Jarry has been rattled twice in three starts. The Penguins officially have a Jarry problem. We also took a walk with the memories of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. It’s a long way since “Three years, Super League.”
Meanwhile, the New Jersey Devils are benefitting bigly from their goalie trade over the summer. Young Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson played over 30 minutes last night, but Montreal is also getting some immature performances that are starting to draw negative attention. The Philadelphia Flyers–have you ever seen the Flyers win the Cup?–are returning home from their long western road trip without a win after losing in Seattle.
The Penguins are home tonight before we embark on another road trip. We’re headed west through Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver, but the NHL schedule makers, in their infinite wisdom, are giving us only 12 hours in Vancouver and three days in Edmonton. Unlike last year, I won’t be up for 36 hours straight trying to drive from Calgary to Edmonton and back in a snowstorm (spoiler, I didn’t make it, but a nice tow truck driver gave me a ride to Tim Horton’s and an Uber got me to the airport).
On Saturday, I’m going to do our first subscriber-only Q&A—no holds barred. Subscribers will get an email later today to submit their questions. I’ll also make a post on the website. The only thing I ask is that the answers not be shared publicly. It’s for your eyes only.

Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: I feel like I got this one right. From the scene in the locker room, the Penguins superstars have come a long way since “Three years, Super League.’ The story of the emotional milestone night involving Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
Now, to the transactions.
Penguins GM Kyle Dubas bought a little time to make more decisions or let things play out further on Thursday when the team activated goalie Alex Nedeljkovic, but he won’t play for the Penguins right away.
Nedeljkovic’s activation and assignment only further heightened the tensions surrounding the Penguins goalie situation. Yes, the Penguins officially have a Tristan Jarry problem.
This was not how it was supposed to play out.
NHL Trade Talk, News, Hockey Now
CTV News: There’s another potential bombshell sexual assault allegation against junior hockey players, but again, this report comes past the time that police can do a forensic investigation. A woman recently called Ontario police to report a sexual assault in 2014 perpetrated by eight OHL players. Some details are being withheld right now, but the investigation is beginning.
I fully believe these stories. Throughout my career, I’ve heard too many things that lend credence to these types of allegations.
TSN: Very simply, things are south and going further south in Denver. Many fans are connecting the situation to the Penguins and Jarry, but I think that’s a bit too easy. Do the Colorado Avalanche need a goalie trade?
Philly Hockey Now: The Philly start has been bad, which is good news for the Penguins. Seattle was the latest to tub-thump the Philadelphia Flyers.
New Jersey Hockey Now: As expected, the New Jersey Devils are pretty good. Coach Sheldon Keefe is pushing the right buttons. They won again last night, beating Ottawa, and Jacob Markstrom was superb.
Washington Hockey Now: There was a lot of change in D.C. this summer, just as I suppose there will be a lot of change no matter what happens in November. For now, we’ll both focus on hockey as the new beans are making an immediate impact with the Washington Capitals.

Sometimes the easiest answer is the correct answer. I doubt Jarry’s 12 team M-NTC would hold up a deal; I would think he’d welcome a change of scenery and prefer any NHL club as opposed to Wilkes-Barre. I also can’t imagine he would want to continue playing in PIT. The real challenge will be to find a club that wants 4 more years of Jarry (ok, 3 and some change). On the right team, if Jarry’s play improves, he could be an asset, to say a western conference team. Ultimately for a BOLD season, you need BOLD moves by mgmt… Read more »
In the words of Billy Madison, “Oh, I see what’s going on here. You, me, the Penguin. Well baby, it takes two to tango.”
Or something like that….haha truer words have never been spoken. Although, it won’t take long for the local populace to start lighting crap on fire on Jarry’s doorstep. In the battle between Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore, I’ve always preferred Madison to Gilmore. Both great movies though, still a toss-up between Veronica Vaughn and Virginia Venit.
Like I said weeks ago, Neddy and Blomqvist would do just fine in a 60-40 split. The challenge is to find someone to overpay for Jarry despite his diminished value and do it sooner than later. The onus is on Duby to correct the mistake he made shortly after he came aboard, when Sullivan convinced him that Jarry was worth an extension despite facts to the contrary.
Maybe a straight up one for one trade — but would the Avs really want Jarry?
TJ’s next appearance should be in a Baby Penguins uni. Can’t afford to toss frivolously toss away points that will be coveted in March. If he regains form, fine. It’s him and Blom, trade Ned. If he never regains form, let him remain in WBS. This isn’t rocket science.
I wonder how far he can go? Wheeling?
Because of the talent behind him and his inconsistency, it’s only a matter of time, before Jarry gets moved. Dudas needs to get a player or picks as he escapes a majority or all of the $5.5 million cap space anvil from his backpack.
(DK. no answer needed, unless you insist.)
If be happy if it’s Jarry and a 2nd for future considerations. But I’d assume they would retain salary if they find a taker
I am living in Kraken area now but will always be a Pens fan first. Was hoping to meet you in Sherlocks. Thats why I decided to do the Calgary Edmonton trip this year. Should be no snow in Oct. Cant imagine doing it in Jan or Feb. Kraken are fun to watch. Tanev gave me a nod when he saw me in my Crosby sweater.
Oh, and Fire Sully!
I’ll see if I can round up the crew. My life is usually hectic, even on the road, but I’ll see what I can do.
If I was Jarry I would ask for a trade. The guy can’t win us fans in Pa. If he wins 20 straight then has a stinker and I’m just as guilty of saying YOU SUCK JARRY….not sure why I never blame one of the D men or say that ones on Karlson…but when Blomquist is in net and a puck goes in I’m all over Karlson and Letang. Not sure why I’m like that… weird…..Go Neddy-Blomguist
I don’t think it matters if Jarry requests a trade, it will be the same situation as the Penguins casually making him available last summer.
Here’s an out of the box trade idea: Jarry (5.375 million), Poulin (775k) and 2nd rounder to Utah for Lawson Crouse (4.3 mill) and Kevin Stenlund (2.0 million) with 150k retained by UHC. It would be a fresh start for Jarry and relieve the Pens of the cap hit. Poulin and Stenlund thrown in to make the money work and 2nd rounder as enticement for UHC to take him. At this point I think it would be worth more to dump Jarry than keep the 2nd rounder.
I’m not sure EA24 would approve that one
