Dan’s Daily: Sharks Get Lucky, Trocheck a Hero, Penguins & Jake

Published

Vincent Trocheck, Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL trade talk and Stanley Cup playoffs.

The hockey was incredible Tuesday night. It was high drama from start to finish, as both games went to overtime (and beyond). Vincent Trocheck was the New York Rangers hero in double OT as Jake Guentzel and the Carolina Hurricanes fell behind 0-2 in the series. A report detailed Guentzel’s injury with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and it was painful. Elsewhere in the Daily, Washington Capitals goalie Darcy Kuemper might be on the NHL trade block, and Macklin Celebrini is headed to San Jose.

Good on San Jose, though the poor kid will probably spend 75% of his entry-level contract on rent.

It seems like a lifetime ago that the Penguins were eliminated, though I’m still dealing with the toll of the season. Today is the first Penguins LIVE chat we’ve done in quite a while. We’re going to do them every Wednesday at noon. We’re going to start with coach Mike Sullivan and big-name trade talk. You can join the cue and be notified when we begin right here.

I’ll also begin making the chats available as a podcast. Down the line, we’ll have guests and do them more often than once a week. First, I have to get through the hell week of interviewing a dozen writers for a few positions we have open, as well as season-ending interviews with a lot of our writers. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, my schedule doesn’t have a break from 4-10 p.m.

I swear I used to be just a radio guy. Then, just a writer. Simpler times! I’ll see you on the Penguins live chat.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: An interesting report indicated Jake Guentzel’s injury at the end of his Penguins tenure was a bit more serious and certainly painful than we thought. Also, he really seems to like Carolina. More from the Penguins winger.

The dream didn’t come through. The 1.5% chance in the NHL Draft Lottery didn’t pan out, and the Penguins are currently without a first-round pick in the coming NHL Draft.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now: Quinn Priester got lit up Tuesday night, and the Angels destroyed the Pirates 9-0. Priester’s future is getting murky with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now

San Jose Hockey Now: I’m excited for colleague Sheng Peng. He’s been with us since the beginning, and now he’ll get to cover a San Jose Sharks team that should greatly improve with the first-overall pick. A scout already gave Sheng some inside info, including the quote, “The Sharks have never had a player and leader of this caliber. Ever.” More inside dirt on Macklin Celebrini.

For his part, he’s excited and does not want to know what Zillow is. Celebrini met the media.

Sportsnet: How’s this for a whopper in the NHL trade rumors: Kings center Pierre-Luc Dubois for Capitals goalie Darcy Kuemper. Jeff Marek said an NHL exec proposed that to him. It was in his latest Rink Fries.

I really do have to start writing a Pressbox Nachos column again.

Colorado Hockey Now: Game 1 was a huge comeback win. Down 3-0, Nathan MacKinnon and crew proved can storm back against more than just the Penguins by scoring four straight on the tough Dallas Stars. Evan Rawal takes us inside the locker room after it ended with a dramatic overtime breakaway goal and win for the Colorado Avalanche.

The Cup is coming back to Colorado. We might have a Kings-Blackhawks war, Part 2, brewing between Vegas and Colorado.

Sportsnet: Guentzel had two goals for Carolina, but Vincent Trocheck was the double OT here as the Rangers beat Carolina. There was little question that Carolina outplayed them for most of the game. It was Igor’s show and a 2-0 Rangers series lead.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Finally, a report that doesn’t include Mike Sullivan. GM Tom Fitzgerald is closing in on a new Devils coach.

Podcasts would be welcome! It would be great to listen from a source other than YouTube like Apple Podcasts or even Spotify.
