Dan’s Daily: Penguins Push Back; Rangers Booed, Accused of Tampering

Pittsburgh Penguins Fight Rangers

Oh, the fireworks might be on the inside at the NHL Governors meeting. Without saying it directly, the Ottawa Senators owner left little doubt he was accusing the New York Rangers of tampering regarding recent NHL trade rumors that sprang up in the NY Post about Brady Tkachuk. The Pittsburgh Penguins are enjoying the pushback against their worst selves, and the power play units have become a hodgepodge of top and depth players. Aaron Portzline reported that Jacob Trouba turned down a couple of teams before accepting the deal to Anaheim, and Trouba’s former team, New York, was booed off the ice Monday. And Colorado was able to dump struggling goalie Alexandar Georgiev and get some goaltending help for him.

I cranked out episode 10 of No Pucks Given. It’s not the sexiest and lacks the sharp elbows of the previous episodes, in large part because the Penguins are having a good run.

I can always tell when fans are happy because that’s when I get the most insane replies, with folks trying so hard to prove negative points; when most people vacate the dance floor, that’s when it’s showtime!

Speaking of showtime, we still haven’t gotten around to building the podcast page, but I cut episode 10 of No Pucks Given Monday evening in front of a live audience. We dug deeper into the Penguins turnaround, talked to a few players about the intensity in the room after the game, and a bit about the team putting general manager Kyle Dubas in a difficult spot. Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Three thoughts on the genesis of the Penguins’ big weekend and what it could mean. From the defensemen to more on the team’s push to make Dubas’s decisions as tough as possible in the Penguins blog.

The power play shakeup seems to be in full effect, with some interesting combinations that were a carryover from Saturday’s game. Also, here’s the update on Phillip Tomasino from Penguins practice.

After Saturday’s win, there was a roller coaster of emotions that culminated with what I can only describe as hunger or anger. We talked to several players and asked coach Mike Sullivan about the team’s evolving disposition. In the struggles, players confessed to learning a lot about themselves and the team. NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now

Colorado Hockey Now: The team had lost confidence in Alexandar Georgiev and found a way to trade him for a journeyman they think can be a starter. General manager Chris MacFarland explained how the deal went down and why he made the swap. It was a bit surprising they pulled it off–the Colorado Avalanche goalie trade.

Sportsnet: Ottawa owner Michael Andlauer was none too happy about trade rumors appearing in the NY Post and pointed a finger directly at the New York Rangers. In fact, Andlauer did so with multiple national outlets. There’s no denying the owner is angry, and he’s not shy about saying why. It’s a soap opera developing at the NHL Governor’s meeting.

To answer the trade rumors part, nope, not happening.

The Athletic ($): Before Jacob Trouba accepted a deal with the Anaheim Ducks, other teams were indeed interested. Trouba had some control, even as he says the Rangers used the threat of waivers to get him to accept a trade. Aaron Portzline reports that Trouba rejected deals to Columbus and Detroit.

I like both of those cities very much. Anaheim over those places?

Forever Blueshirts: The Rangers tried to get Anaheim to make a better offer. The details are leaking out–the Blueshirts wanted Cam Fowler in the deal. More insider details on the Rangers trade.

At the Garden, it didn’t go any better for the Rags, as the worst team in the league–the Chicago Blackhawks–pasted them at home. I’m sure Penguins fans will chuckle just a bit as boos rained down on the struggling New York Rangers.
