Pittsburgh Penguins, Tristan Jarry goal-against in Colorado. NHL trade talk, free agents

LAS VEGAS — Leon Draisaitl and Igor Shesterkin could decimate salary standards after July 1. Both will be unrestricted free agents on July 1, 2025, and both are going to be well–very well–paid. But just how well? The NHL trade market is bubbling, and Jake Guentzel’s name is still popping up, while some are wondering if Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry will hit the NHL trade block. We also took reader’s questions about the Penguins’ trade chips, top prospects, and Sidney Crosby’s next contract. The Florida Panthers took the party to the beach, the Detroit Red Wings are wheeling and dealing with a pair of trades, and the Philadelphia Flyers will officially get dynamic prospect Matvei Michkov this coming season.

It was a long day Tuesday. I pulled out the credit card and arrived in Las Vegas two days early, though my preferred airline had a few curveballs in store for my trip.

On these Penguins road trips, I’ve seen a lot of unique people and things. Las Vegas is always interesting, but the Atlanta airport was a carnival of people and chaos, per usual. However, there was a family that commanded the attention of the entire gate area. Everyone took a double take and made room. There was a young family with five kids—twins and triplets, all boys. The twins were about five or six, and the trips were probably a little less than two.

Every parent in the gate area looked on in some combination of terror and admiration. The kids were well-behaved as they rolled around on the carpet, entertaining themselves.

The French Canadians boarding the plane behind me were laughing, “They’ve got their own hockey team!” And I’m sure Mom and Dad would be forgiven if they had separate beds until she’s 50.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The readers speak (and ask). We got some good questions, though the attention funnel is narrowing. Trades and free agents are the focus, but we slipped some prospects’ questions in there, too: The weekly Penguins Q&A.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now: A night after getting swatted, it was the Buccos who brought the sticks and knocked around the Cincinnati Reds. Here’s what went down on the riverfront in the high-scoring Pittsburgh Pirates win.

Steelers Now: The Steelers trade talk is a whisper, but it is present. The team could use a proven top-end wide receiver, and the San Francisco 49ers happen to have one they’re dangling. Brandon Aiyuk sounded off on the rumors.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now

Florida Hockey Now: The beach hasn’t looked like that much fun since Frankie and Annette (c’mon kids, gotta keep you on your toes with vintage cultural references, too). With little sleep and lots of liquid courage, the Stanley Cup took a trip to the beach with the Florida Panthers.

A1A, Beachfront Avenue. Girls were hot wearing less than bikinis, Rockman lovers driving Lamborghinis. Just in case you’re curious, here are the Florida Panthers parade plans.

Detroit Hockey Now: Steve Yzerman put one of his prospects on a train going anywhere. First, Detroit recouped some draft capital and assets by swinging a trade with the Nashville Predators. Here’s the first Red Wings trade. Then, Stevie Y wasn’t done. There was no disguise for his double vision. He used the assets to dump salary. Here’s the second Red Wings trade.

Oh, and the Hockey Hall of Fame invited seven new members, including one controversial pick (Jeremy Roenick) and Red Wings stalwart Pavel Datsyuk.

TSN: Here’s the full list of Hall of Fame inductees.

I’m 100% on board with Jeremy Roenick as a Hall of Famer. For some reason, there is a portion of hockey that doesn’t give enough credit to that American crew from the 1990s, including Roenick and Keith Tkachuk. I am not part of that crew.

Philly Hockey Now: His contract with SKA is terminated. Now it’s Philadelphia freedom for Matvei Michkov, who is now speaking out. Here’s the Philadephia Flyers prospect’s own words.

OK, OK, I’m probably done with the song lyrics and little jokes. Maybe. That’s what happens when I’m stuck on airplanes all day. Now we’ll get to the NHL rumors and round up.

Sportsnet: Leon Draisaitl. Igor Shesterkin. They’re going to get paid with a fleet of armored trucks. Mitch Marner might be in the conversation, too. There could be a few players hoping to get the gold on the ceiling, either this summer or even more so next summer.

More from Elliotte Friedman and 32 Thoughts. OK, caution here–he did NOT put Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry on the NHL trade block. Did NOT. However, plenty of people are wondering if Jarry will be available. Also, the Carolina Hurricanes are simultaneously pushing to re-sign Jake Guentzel while trying to trade his rights.

TSN: Bob McKenzie polls league sources and scouts to create the draft list. Macklin Celebrini will go first overall, but what about everyone else? Here’s my favorite draft list.

Colorado Hockey Now: The Avalanche took Casey Mittelstadt off the market, and before the Stanley Cup had a chance to rest, our Evan Rawal was already vulturing the champions. Which Panthers can the Colorado Avalanche poach?
