Dan’s Daily: Canucks Reduce Trade Talks, Penguins Injury Updates

Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL Trade, Jim Rutherford

A significant part of the Vancouver Canucks soap opera will end on Monday as Bruce Boudreau will be fired, Rick Tocchet will take over, and Jim Rutherford will turn the page on what should be his most embarrassing chapter as a GM. Meanwhile,  Rutherford and GM Patrik Allvin have reportedly whittled down the Bo Horvat suitors before the NHL trade deadline. Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang is grateful to his teammates,, and the Penguins are slowly getting healthy.

Rutherford is one of the good guys, but his handling of the Boudreau situation (he was surprised to learn the owners gave Boudreau a two-year deal, so he has shoved Boudreau out the door all season) combined with talented veterans publicly dangled on the NHL trade block, is a very bad look.

I don’t think Penguins fans remember, but the beginning of the Rutherford tenure in Pittsburgh was similar. Remember the Sidney Crosby rumors/unhappiness and team infighting — Nov. 17, 2005, in New Jersey was rock bottom.

As a boss, I’m also learning that sometimes you can’t tell everyone everything.

Pittsburgh Penguins / Steelers, Pirates

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Ryan Poehling is a game-time decision, and others are getting closer. Mike Sullivan dished the updates on the Penguins’ injuries.

It’s been six weeks that changed Kris Letang’s life. From a stroke to the unexpected death of his father. His declined to share too many personal details but was grateful to his Pittsburgh Penguins teammates.

PHN+: “Whatever it takes.” Penguins defenseman Mark Friedman agitates, joins the play, and provides the Penguins with missing elements. Some guy named Dan Kingerski strongly opined — Here’s why the Penguins need to keep Mark Friedman in the lineup.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now

HNIC, 32 Thoughts: Rick Tocchet will take over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday, and Vancouver has reduced the suitors before the March 3 NHL trade deadline.

Montreal Hockey Now: Bad news for one of the game’s fun young players — Cole Caufield is out for the season. Montreal Canadiens news.

The Habs are trying to acquire another first-round pick. Canadiens’ NHL trade rumors.

San Jose Hockey Now: There are several NHL trade block stories on San Jose Hockey Now. Erik Karlsson wants a winner, and Timo Meier can negotiate with other teams to increase the return for the San Jose Sharks.

Calgary Hockey Now: Daryl Sutter is taking some heat for being dismissive of Jakob Pelletier’s NHL debut, but the Calgary Flames beat Tampa Bay anyway.

LA Hockey Now: Hey hey–2020 second-overall pick Quinton Byfield is finally catching on, but goaltending is a mess for the LA Kings.

Penguins Playoff Race & Metro Division:

Washington Hockey Now: Just as the Capitals got a few players back, now Alex Ovechkin is out.

NYI Hockey Now: Good news for the Penguins — Carolina handed a fourth-straight loss to the New York Islanders.

Detroit Hockey Now: Detroit did everything right but still lost 2-1 to the Flyers. The Detroit Red Wings are falling out of the race.

Philly Hockey Now: Craziness. With a strong rebound and the win over Detroit, the Flyers could be five points behind the Capitals for a playoff spot. No joke–the Philadelphia Flyers’ victorious takeaways.

Florida Hockey Now: The Panthers are making up some ground. They’ve played three more games than the Penguins and one less than the Capitals, but they’re now just two points back of the Penguins and five back of the Capitals. The Florida Panthers beat the Wild 5-3.

Not familiar with the 2005 story about Crosby and team unhappiness. Refresh our memory.

No story here as again no editor reviewing this copy for ERRORS. Such is the internet world where we have to rely on our ability to interpret what the writer is trying to say since they cannot spell or get facts straight. In November 2005 Sidney Crosby was one year into his NHL Career and Rutherford was not at all associated with the Pittsburgh Penguins. In November 2015, well now that was a different story.

Maybe it’s time to dress 7 D on a regular basis. Friedman offers more to the lineup than (name) on the 4th line. 42 can eat nachos for the balance of the season.Plus Letang and Petry can’t play the minutes they have been or they will be burnt by playoffs
