Dan’s Daily: Fans Make Boudreau Emotional, Penguins Fight for Win

Pittsburgh Penguins win, NHL trade talk, Bruce Boudreau

The NHL trade talks for Bo Horvat intensified. Vancouver Canucks fans paid a tribute to coach Bruce Boudreau during the game Friday that nearly brought the coach to tears. Jack Eichel isn’t holding up his end of the bargain in Vegas, and the team is slumping without Mark Stone. Penguins defenseman P.O Joseph high-sticked his brother, and his brother high-sticked him. Penguins Brock McGinn and Mark Friedman fought the Ottawa Senators, and Tristan Jarry stopped 44 shots in his return as the Penguins beat Ottawa 4-1.

Coach Mike Sullivan wants a tighter game, but watching a 91-shot game with plenty of skating, a couple of fights, and good scoring chances was more enjoyable.

Also, Row House Cinemas in Lawrenceville has They Live this weekend. I never knew it was an anti-Reagan film. I always thought of it as anti-Communist. Pretty big difference. But at least it has Rowdy Roddy Piper and the best fight scene (with David Keith) this side of Kill Bill.

And for all of the affected hockey writers affected by Vox’s bombshell Friday and want to keep writing hockey, email

Luck is preparation and opportunity getting drunk and making bad decisions. Within hours, we were ready to go — We’ve got a MASSIVE venture already underway. Hockey bloggers wanted.

Pittsburgh Penguins:

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Penguins made a flurry of roster moves before the game, including putting Kris Letang on LTIR. Penguins roster updates.

Fight night at PPG. One almost-big hit, followed by Travis Hamonic jumping in to fight Brock McGinn.

The puck stops here. The Dave Molinari Penguins recap.

I think you’ll like the Penguins locker room feature today. It was short on headline-grabbing quotes but long on players talking hockey. Brock McGinn changed the game. Penguins room.

NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now:

Sportsnet: Horvat to Boston? Colorado? The NHL trade talks are intensifying.

This was a special moment. Canucks fans voiced their support for coach Bruce Boudreau whom Jim Rutherford is going to fire in the next couple of weeks, (likely) when Rick Tocchet is able to take over. It’s awkward, if not wrong, and fans paid tribute that nearly brought Boudreau to tears.

As much as I enjoyed Rutherford’s Penguins tenure, Canucks fans are going to talk about this period for a long, long time. Rutherford knows how to pull a rabbit out of his hat, but the more likely result for trading away Bo Horvat, Brock Boeser and more will not be good.

Vegas Hockey Now: Coach Bruce Cassidy laid out the Vegas problems, including passengers. Jack Eichel made the list.

Metro Division:

Washington Hockey Now: Sammi Silber goes inside the BMW line. Nick Backstrom, Tom Wilson and Sonny Milano are coming together for the Washington Capitals.

When I’m done with this job, I suspect Sammi is going to be one of our bright success stories. She was a blogger with a dream. She absorbs everything we tell her and is always pushing herself. Terrible news for Max Pacioretty. Not long after returning from a torn achilies, he did it again. The Carolina Hurricanes center is going to be out for a long time.

Philly Hockey Now: The Flyers are playing much better hockey. So, too, is maligned defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen.

NY Post: Third place New York Rangers are also dealing with power play issues. It’s been a power outage in Manhattan. .

And not the Metro, but The Buffalo Sabres retired Ryan Miller’s jersey on Friday.

And for fun, here is the reaction from the Joseph parents after P.O high-sticked Matheiu, and Mathieu high-sticked P.O. The pair earned offsetting minors:

Was that the first time in NHL history that brothers sat side by side in the penalty box for committing a penalty against each other? (I personally thought only PO was guilty.)

Answered my own question- Keith and Wayne Primeau back in 1997.

and another 1992, Brent and Rich Sutter each got unsportsmanlike conducts in the second period and then roughing penalties against each other in the third during a Chicago Blackhawks– St. Louis Blues game.

“They Live” is a turrible movie. It is an anti-film lover film.

It’s criminal the way that Rutherford has hung his coach out to dry. If he doesn’t like Boudreau, then dump him. But don’t treat him like a piece of excrement. And Rutherford wants solid people to work for him in the future? Good luck, loser.
