(UPDATED) Penguins Skate: Jarry a Maybe, Zucker WILL Play

There was always hope, one guesses, that Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry might have shaken off his latest injury and would be on the ice and a full go for the team’s morning skate Saturday at PPG Paints Arena. Well, the news was mostly good.

Jarry went on the ice 40 minutes before the skate to work with goalie coach Andy Chiodo for more than 20 minutes, then took part in the skate.

Jarry, who turned up injured Thursday with what was described as a lower-body injury, did several drills, then faced some shots in his pre-skate workout. He took a rest on the bench, then joined his teammates for the main skate, along with newly recalled goalie Dustin Tokarski and Casey DeSmith.

The fact that Jarry skated early would seem to indicate that he will not start Saturday night against the visiting Washington Capitals.

Also of note, injured defenseman Jeff Petry participated, while winger Jason Zucker did not. Zucker played Thursday at Dallas but was a game-time decision and seemed less than 100 percent. Petry has missed the past four games because of an upper-body injury but has been skating.

Petry mixed in on the third defensive pairings. Alex Nylander skated in Zucker’s spot on the second line.

Missing were all the other injured players — defensemen Jan Rutta, Marcus Pettersson and Dmitry Kulikov, and forward Nick Bonino.

We hope to get some sort of timetable for Jarry and any other updates from coach Mike Sullivan after the skate.

Update: per Sullivan, Petry was a full participant, but the coach and defenseman confirmed he’s not ready to rejoin the lineup. However, Jason Zucker, who was absent from the morning skate, will play.

Penguins winger Alex Nylander said Zucker “looked much better” than expected. Sullivan said Zucker was “fine.”

The goaltending duo will be a game-time decision. Sullivan said Casey DeSmith will start, but Jarry might be available to backup. If not, Dustin Tokarski will backup DeSmith.
