The Pittsburgh Penguins trade talk picked up Saturday night when Sportsnet reporter Chris Johnston linked the Penguins backup goalies to Toronto on Hockey Night in Canada. The Penguins have a pair of backup goalies playing very well at the moment. Tristan Jarry, who is currently at the NHL level because his small $675,000 salary was more palatable to the cash-strapped Penguins at the beginning of the regular season, has played lights out in his four NHL starts this season. Former backup Casey DeSmith, who is on an NHL contract but playing for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL, is also standing on his head.

Both goalies are behind Matt Murray on the Penguins depth chart, and the Penguins are believed to have tried to move Jarry before the start of the regular season.

Saturday night, Chris Johnston told a Canadian TV audience during the Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada that Jarry or DeSmith could be had but Penguins GM Jim Rutherford is waiting for the right offer.

“I do believe that they would be willing to move one of these guys (Jarry or DeSmith) if the right offer came along,” Johnston said. Read the Sportsnet story and watch the segment here.

Jarry stoned Toronto Saturday night with a 32 save performance in the Penguins 6-1 win at PPG Paints Arena.

On the season, Jarry is now 2-3 with a sparkling .929 save percentage (before the win over Toronto) and 2.25 GAA (stat also not including the Toronto win); numbers which only improved after tonight’s 6-1 victory. In all four of his starts, Jarry has posted at least a .930 save percentage.

The 28-year old DeSmith is 7-4 with two shutouts, a 2.52 GAA and a .916 save percentage with the Baby Pens. In his NHL career, DeSmith is 21-15-6 with a .917 save percentage and a 2.66 GAA.
