Penguins Twitter Reacts to Ugly Loss in Season Opener

Months of excitement for the new Pittsburgh Penguins quickly turned to anxiety over the Pittsburgh Penguins future Thursday night. Some national analysts have predicted the Penguins will miss or struggle to make the playoffs and so there was already an undercurrent of worrying which was unleashed as the Penguins not only no-showed in a 3-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, they were sloppy and looked slow.
Evgeni Malkin was the Penguins best skater. He looked like vintage Malkin as he tortured the defense with precision passes, stickhandled around players and created offensive chances. He spanked his team following the game, too.
As you can imagine, Twitter was not a kind place. Everyone picked a different player to blame…except Jack Johnson who for one was not one of the targets.
First, the original Tweet:
Not to throw gas on the fire, but Malkin basically torched the team tonight. It was as close to sounding the alarm after one game as I’ve seen.

And then everyone chose their goat.
Geno was our best player and he’s right.

Hope the match Geno threw landed on Bjugstad first

Bad night for #8, but I’d love to see Dumoulin with anyone other than Letang.

At least Letang was in playoff form, especially quarterbacking the Power Play.

Good. Crosby looked like shit tonight, so it's nice to see one veteran step up.

@TheDanKingerski BLUE LINE IS TOO SLOW

And finally,
The Pens got their asses handed to them in the 2nd and 3rd periods.
Jack Johnson played in the 2nd and 3rd periods.
Therefore Jack Johnson is the reason the Pens got their asses handed to them in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

Ok, maybe one Jack Johnson tweet. If you were keeping score, that’s one Kris Letang, one Brian Dumoulin, one entire blue line, even Sidney Crosby got a little chirp on Twitter. Fans at PPG booed three times in the third period as the Penguins power play failed to establish zone time. It was a tough night.
And Malkin didn’t mince words afterward. You can read Dan Kingerski’s postgame report and full report card analysis.
The Penguins go again on Saturday.
