Penguins-Canucks Preview

The Penguins have started figuring things out. Defensively, they’ve been superb, allowing just three goals in their last four games. A lot of that was due to the excellence of goalie Tristan Jarry, who started all four games and faced 100 shots, stopping 97 of them.

But in reality, allowing just 25 shots per game is a credit to team defense in front of Jarry too. It helped getting some defensemen back who missed time while in the Covid-19 protocol, but it’s been more than that. The Penguins are controlling play, both in puck possession, and pace. And it doesn’t hurt that they have a lot of scoring depth either. With Jarry playing so well and the offense putting the puck in the net with regularity from multiple lines, the Penguins are dangerous. They’ve outscored their opponents 11-1 in this three game winning streak.

As for the Canucks, they have to be disappointed with where they are to start the season. Many pundits thought they were ready for a breakthrough season, but it just hasn’t come together for Vancouver.

They’ve struggled offensively and really have no one going positively at the moment. NIls Hoglander, who has nine points in 19 games this season, has three goals in the last five games to lead the team.

Bets We Like with a Penguins Win

Penguins to win by 3-plus goals (+200, BetMGM)

[bet-promo id=”24578″ ]

This might seem like a lot at first glance, but it’s not. As we pointed out, the Penguins defense has been really good lately, Jarry is dialed in, and starting again tonight, and Pittsburgh is a heavy favorite. Not to mention, the Canucks have failed to cover the puck line (usually +/- 1.5) in seven straight games. So, you can go from a simple Penguins win at -220 to a cover up the puck line (+120) to pushing the puck line by one goal and nearly flipping the odds completely. This only requires one more Pittsburgh goal beyond the puckline, and doubles your money. Give it a go.

Bets We Like with a Canucks Win

Total goals in the first period OVER 1.5 (-125, FanDuel Sportsbook)

[bet-promo id=”23805″ ]

We don’t particularly like the Canucks to win the game, but if they are going to pull the upset they’ll need to jump on Pittsburgh early and often. The last three times Vancouver visited Pittsburgh, the first period goal total has been three or higher. While we think that technically favors a Penguins win, if the Canucks can open up the scoring and get a first period lead, Pittsburgh has not been a great coming from behind. Either way, you can cash in your ticket.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Evan Rodrigues to score at least one goal (+285, DraftKings Sportsbook)

[bet-promo id=”23817″ ]

The Penguins scoring depth should shine through as coach Mike Sullivan will be able to take advantage of matchups against the weaker lines. Rodrigues has been a pleasant surprise for Pittsburgh and looks to be a guy who can take advantage of one of one of those matchups. Give this one a flier and be thrilled if it hits.

Penguins vs. Canucks Prediction

This one just reads lopsided no matter how you look at it. Great goaltending. Strong team defense, Scoring depth in Pittsburgh and just two teams heading in different directions.

Prediction: Penguins 5, Canucks 2
