On Thursday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins will play host to the Calgary Flames at the PPG Paints Arena. The Flames are 4-1-1 on the season and have won four straight games on the road, while the Penguins are 3-1-2.

Let’s get into our Penguins vs. Flames betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this October 28, 2021 matchup.

Penguins-Flames Preview

The Penguins crashed back to earth in their last game, dropping a 5-1 decision to the Tampa Bay Lightning at PPG Paints Arena, looking more like a team who was missing several top players than the team who was winning in site of their absence.

Meanwhile, the Flames are off to a hot start, and have won four consecutive games, all on the road, and will try to close out their road trip with perfection, claiming another win.

There was some hope in Pittsburgh that Sidney Crosby would make his season debut tonight after off-season wrist surgery, but although he has practiced with the team for four straight days, he is still out. Also, Casey DeSmith will be in net for the Penguins.

Bets We Like with a Penguins Win

Jake Guentzel to score at least one goal (+160, BetMGM)

[bet-promo id=”24578″ ]

Guentzel has been one of the Penguins go-to goal scorers for a few years now, but has gotten off to a slow start this year without Pittsburgh’s top centers in the lineup to feed him the puck.

Still, Guentzel is the top line left winger for the Penguins and although he’s only scored one goal so far this season, he’s getting a lot of ice time and being counted on for production. This feels like a game for him to breakthrough and have a big night, especially with Calgary looking to get home after a long road trip.

Bets We Like with a Flames Win

Johnny Gaudreau to score at least one goal (+280, FanDuel Sportsbook)

[bet-promo id=”23805″ ]

Calgary has been carried offensively by two players to this point in the season. Of the 21 goals they have scored so far, 14 have come off the stick of either Andrew Mangiapane or Elias Lindholm.

While those two are off to great starts, they can’t be expected to carry the team’s water game in and game out. Eventually, some of the other Flames are going to have to get on the scoresheet more consistently.

Gaudreau has been effective, although quietly. He has eight points in six games, but all eight are assists. Look for Johnny Hockey to finally find the back of the net, especially going up a backup goalie in DeSmith.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Penguins to win the first period (+165, DraftKings Sportsbook)

[bet-promo id=”23817″ ]

The Flames have had great first periods in each of their four road games so far on this trip. It’s a big reason why they’ve won each game. But when a team has been away from home as long as the Flames have (nine days) that last game knowing that you’ll be sleeping in your own bed afterward, tends to lack the same enthusiasm.

Couple that with the fact the Pittsburgh has been a good first period team, minus their last game, and these are good odds for the Penguins to have a lead after 20 minutes, especially on home ice.

Penguins vs. Flames Prediction

[bet-promo id=”23812″ ]

This just shapes up as one of those matchups where one team is out of energy from all their and the other is bitter coming off a bad performance in front of their fand. Usually that amounts to an easy win for the home team. We also like the OVER in this game a bit, if you want to take that as well.

Prediction: Penguins 5, Flames 2.
