Penguins vs. Sabres Betting

On Tuesday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins (5-5-4) return home after getting swept on a two-game road trip in which they were outscored 12-4. The Penguins welcome the Buffalo Sabres (6-6-2) to PPG Paints Arena. Buffalo has lost 6-of-7 (1-5-1) after a torrid start. It’s the first of three meetings between the teams this season.

Let’s get into our Penguins vs. Sabres betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this November 16, 2021 matchup.

Penguins-Sabres Preview

The Penguins were finally “mostly” healthy in their last game against Washington (Evgeni Malkin still hasn’t played a game this season with a knee injury), and played perhaps their worst game of the season, getting clobbered by the Capitals 6-1. There is definitely a lot of frustration for the Penguins right now who find themselves in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division, which is an unfamiliar locale for Pittsburgh in the Sidney Crosby era.

Speaking of Crosby, he returned after a bout with Covid-19 to play just his second game of the season Saturday, and didn’t register a point.

As rough as the road trip was, the only change to the lineup for Pittsburgh is Brian Boyle coming out of the lineup with Evan Rodrigues moving into his spot at third line center.

Tristan Jarry will start in goal for Pittsburgh. He’s been mostly solid this season, although he hard a rough outing in Washington. Expect him to bounce back at home.

As for the Sabres, they were a surprisingly good team over their first seven contests, and have completely fallen apart over their last seven.

In six of their eight losses, they have allowed at least four goals, including five straight defeats. Buffalo’s problem has been mostly at even strength as both their power play (21.6%) and penalty kill (82%) rank in top half of the league.

Bets We Like with a Penguins Win

Penguins to win and OVER 6.5 goals (+190, DraftKings Sportsbook)

[bet-promo id=”23817″ ]

It’s highly unusual for one team to be behind another team in the standings at this juncture of the season and be such an overwhelming favorite, but the Penguins are – and rightfully so, as they are the vastly more talented team. Still, they’ve been inconsistent, so one would think the money line would be a little more palatable. It’s not, which stinks. But, you can flip it around by betting them to win and going over the total. You might get a slightly lower total elsewhere, but don’t worry. Buffalo can’t stop anyone and Pittsburgh has a lot of goal scorers in their lineup – it’s the strength of their team. Getting this game to seven total goals shouldn’t be too difficult. Ride the favorite and get value by taking the over with them in a parlay.

Bets We Like with a Sabres Win

Jeff Skinner OVER 2.5 shots on goal (-110, FanDuel Sportsbook)

[bet-promo id=”23805″ ]

We don’t like Buffalo in this game at all, but, Jeff Skinner has been firing a lot of shots on net this season and leads the Sabres with 47 shots on goal. As such, you can expect him to be the guy Buffalo tries to get on the board early in the game and on the power play, so exceeding 2.5 shots ought to be doable for Skinner, even in a game where his team’s odds of winning are really long. They aren’t the greatest odds, but probably one that will hit and can add to your bankroll.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Sidney Crosby OVER 0.5 power play points (+175, BetMGM)

[bet-promo id=”24578″ ]

We know what you are thinking – the Pittsburgh power play has been dreadful. It’s clicking at only 8.7 percent, which is worst in the NHL. And the Sabres are ok at killing penalties, so why this bet? The Penguins power play is never this bad, and the more Crosby plays, the better it will be. He makes the power play tick. Here’s a matchup that could help it get well quickly, and if it does, you can bet Crosby will be in the center of the action for Pittsburgh. Good odds. Good bet. Take it a run.

Penguins vs. Sabres Prediction

[bet-promo id=”23812″ ]

Pittsburgh ran up against an equally struggling team in Ottawa over the weekend and were skunked by the Senators. But, they were still shorthanded in that game, it was on the road, and it was a bit of a look-ahead game with Washington on tap. No such circumstances this time. The Penguins are as healthy as they’ve been all season, are back home and are angry coming off a lost road trip against a bad team that gives up a lot of goals. Recipe for success for Pittsburgh.

Prediction: Penguins 5, Sabres 2
