Dan’s Daily: Petry Speaks, Penguins News, More Canadiens Trade Talk

Pittsburgh Penguins, Tristan Jarry, Kasperi Kapanen

Week 2 of NHL free agency. It seems the Metro Division teams loaded up last week and are now trying to shed salary via the NHL trade market this week. The Washington Capitals and New York Rangers could put recognizable names on the block to save a few bucks. There were 24 players, including Pittsburgh Penguins winger Kasperi Kapanen, who filed for arbitration, and Jeff Petry, Ryan Poehling, and Ty Smith spoke for the first time since the Penguins acquired them.

And Evan Rodrigues remains unsigned. What the hell!?

Weekends are supposed to be a slow time for sports websites, especially the summer. Instead, I’d like to thank the 200,000 people who visited Pittsburgh Hockey Now. We’re close to one million this month, the Hockey Now network is already over three million. And the Pittsburgh Now network with SteelersNow.com and PittsburghBaseballNow.com will reach over 1.5 million Pittsburghers (the new coverages are growing!) Big announcements coming on Thursday!

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: GM Ron Hextall said he was comfortable they knew the salary range that Kasperi Kapanen would get. Sunday, Kapanen and 23 other players filed for arbitration. I guess we’ll find out. Pittsburgh Penguins news.

The Penguins snagged a pair of interesting players via the NHL trade market on Saturday who could blossom. Ryan Poehling is a former first-round pick. He’s big. He’s fast. It hasn’t yet worked for him at the NHL level (though he still scored eight goals last season). Can the Penguins’ system and culture revive Ryan Poehling?

And here is new Pittsburgh Penguins d-man Jeff Petry with alliteration — Can the Penguins Pick the Perfect Partner for Petry? Pittsburgh Penguins coverage.

SteelersNow.com: More stadium name drama (oh, just call it Acrisure. Yinz goina Foodland for some Clark Bars?) and Adam Schefter says the Steelers starting QB job is Trubisky’s to lose. Pittsburgh Steelers news.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now: I LOVE this new feature at PBN. The boys and I had drinks with our new baseball editor-in-chief on Saturday. We’ll announce him on Thursday! But one of the new features you’ll want to follow along is a daily update of the Pirates prospects and farm system — Pirates Prospects Daily.

Just bookmark that site. I think we’ve assembled the BEST Pirates coverage and we’ll be covering the things you want.

NHL Trade Chatter, News & National Hockey Now

Montreal: I really liked Mike Matheson’s game with the Penguins. I took a little heat –good-natured, I think. from Double M — for liking Matheson and Letang together (the analytics were eye-popping. They dominated the puck when together). And Canadiens GM Kent Hughes was “thrilled” to get his former client. Canadiens trade.

Here’s the big NHL trade rumor — Pierre Luc Dubois to the Montreal Canadiens. It’s stirring and getting louder, and it appears Dubois is paving the way for it to happen. Here’s the full story — NHL trade rumors.

Boston: The Bruins would like to get David Pastrnak’s name on a new contract. Negotiations are not going well, yet. An NHL source tells our boys in Boston, “This is going to drag on.” Boston Bruins coverage.

Washington: If there was one team with an “in” to draft a Russian in the first round, it was the Capitals. They snagged talented Ivan Miroshnichenko. There are issues with a war, military service and Mother Russia putting the boot on players to keep them at home. Here’s what the year ahead looks like for Miroshnichenko — Washington Capitals news.

Also — the Capitals may need to shed some centers this season. Save money, create space. Lars Eller could be the odd man out. Capitals trade talk.

NYI: The NHL trade rumor mill doesn’t just involve large names. The Islanders have needs and wants. Perhaps the Avalanche’s Sam Girard is the solution. New York Islanders trade chatter.

Florida: Wow — two-way contracts for a pair of established NHL veterans. Florida snagged Michael del Zotto and Chris Tierney on bargain contracts. Florida Panthers signings.

Vancouver: The Hockey Canada rape scandal is not going away. Parliament is involved. In 2018, there was an ugly incident. The details are sketchy, involving eight players and a young woman. Some big-name players, too. The investigation has been reopened and Rob Simpson reports that a few BCers are included in the investigation. Team Canada allegations.
