Dan’s Daily: Is McDavid the Best Ever? More Trouba Head Hunting

Published

on

Pittsburgh Penguins, Sidney Crosby

When I saw the story, I knew it would get a reaction from you…because it got a reaction from me. Managing Editor at TSN Steve Dryden argues that Connor McDavid is better than Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. I’ll let you read his argument. The Calgary Flames scored a third period goal on a 132-foot slapshot in Game 4. The New York Rangers have brought their worst to the series against the Carolina Hurricanes, and the officials have their hands full. What about Rickard Rakell and more on the Pittsburgh Penguins’ offseason plans.

And some cool news about Brooks Orpik.

**PHN passed 1 MILLION readers this month. Just the second time we’ve done that and we did it in less than 24 days. Incredible. So, we’re having a party Thursday night at Coughlin’s Law! Happy hour begins at 5 p.m. But you have to RSVP here

First–Nothing to see here. Max Domi was pulling back as Jacob Trouba launched himself like a Kronwall missile and accidentally tried to decapitate Domi.

Sportsnet: It got interesting because Carolina got a little testy. A Carolina instigator penalty became the difference in the hockey game, as New York won Game 4.

Our Dave Molinari asked Ron Hextall if he thought there was intent by Trouba to injure Sidney Crosby. Hextall grimaced. Paused. “Did you see the first shift of the series?”

The NHL may have to instruct officials to be a bit judgier regarding Trouba, eh?

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Rickard Rakell. He’s also a UFA, though getting slightly less attention than Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. Rakell showed well with 13 points in 19 games and chemistry with both Sidney Crosby and Malkin. So… about Rickard Rakell?

I sat with the Ron Hextall presser for a bit. Rewatched (I was there live, too). Re-read his answers. Here’s the thing, the offseason isn’t entirely under Hextall’s control, and he could be backed into a corner. Pittsburgh Penguins predicament.

NHL News & National Hockey Now:

Washington Hockey Now: We’ll start with some non hockey–Brooks Orpik is now a college graduate with a degree in Communications. Washington Capitals news.

Communications, eh? Poor guy seems over qualified to be a barista.

Calgary Hockey Now: The good news was Calgary tied the game with an incredible 132-goal, but Edmonton still won Game 4, and the Calgary Flames face elimination.

TSN: Better than Lemieux and Gretzky? Not greater, but better? Yes, TSN says Connor McDavid is the best player ever.

Yeah, no.

Montreal Hockey Now: Does the NHL want a team in Quebec City? Or, perhaps more importantly, will the Montreal Canadiens allow it?

Boston: The Boston Bruins will also be big-game hunting for defensemen.

Florida: Double ouch. Tampa Bay swept Florida, who then had to admit they aspire to be Tampa Bay. The Florida Panthers’ offseason begins.

Colorado: The Avs have a chance to eliminate St. Louis tonight. Head coach Jared Bednar says the “extracurricular” stuff is OVER, at least for his team. He may be reminded, that it takes two to agree to that. Colorado Avalanche off-day.

Before that series I said to a coworker that the only way I could see Edmonton getting past the Flames would be if McDavid and Draisaitl took their games to a level we haven’t seen before. Well, that is most definitely what happened. I can honestly say I haven’t seen a player as good as McDavid, or that much better than everyone else on earth, since Mario. And Draisaitl is as good as anyone else in the NHL. What a joy to watch these guys. When he is on the ice there is nothing you can do short of a… Read more »

NHL is drifting back into a territory once occupied by guys like Matt Cooke. It’s a head for a head this playoffs.

Why hasn’t McJesus (bow head here) been targeted like Crosby was since the first puck-drop? If I’m Crosby and his agents, I have a lawsuit ready to served upon retirement, whenever that may be.

Perhaps it’s hard to hit what you can’t catch. Or maybe because Kane can fight and Kassian is legitimately crazy enough that he might maim someone if they did?

McJesus (bow head here) is no faster or elusive than Orr was in his time. There are plenty of chances to hit him. He can be hit during a stoppage of play. It’s the NHL, remember. He seems to be off limits for some reason, though. Could it be because he’s a true Canadian and true Canadians run much of the league? Hmmm.

Yeah. McDavid/Draisaitl/Kane are just skating circles around everyone else when they are on the ice together… crazy.

Yeah, maybe one day he’ll actually win something other than the fastest skater competition . . .

McDavid is a late bloomer, so he doesn’t have a chance to be the youngest captain to ever hoist the cup. He doesn’t have a play-off MVP, he doesn’t even have a ring, he hasn’t even been to the finals. Till he does win some cups, get some play-off hardwares (MVP included), then you can start making some comparing, cause he might just be another Marcel Dionne for the time being. I don’t have doubts, but circumstances do happen, Crosby and Malkin can attest to that, but they still ended up with 3 cups.

Don’t denigrate a communications degree. My daughter has one to go along with two masters and a Ph.D. The comm degree may be one of the most misunderstood because it is generalist in nature and offers flexibility for future studies, things that are necessary but not immediately valued in a world of specialists.

Why do you guys write this s_it McJeewiz has only Stanley Cup Championships. Does not have to numbers of Lemieux, Gretzky or Sid. This is just to tick people off. So you get your jollies. It also sounds like you write like your all backed up and you need to get laid.
