Reports: Former Penguins Assistants Joining Sullivan With Rangers

Former Pittsburgh Penguins assistants David Quinn and Ty Hennes are following Mike Sullivan to New York to become Rangers assistants, according reports Thursday by the New York Post and Elliott Friedman of Sportsnet.

Sullivan took the Rangers coaching job last month, days after he and the Penguins parted ways.

For Quinn, it is a return to the team where he was the head coach for three seasons, starting in 2018-19. He then was the head coach for the San Jose Sharks for two seasons before joining long-time friend Sullivan on the Penguins staff.

Quinn, who oversaw the Penguins’ defensemen and power play, was mentioned in some reports as a possible candidate to replace Sullivan with the Penguins, but the Penguins this week hired Dan Muse — himself a former Rangers assistant — as head coach.

Hennes was the Penguins’ conditioning coach before being elevated to assistant coach for the past two seasons.

The other member of Sullivan’s staff in Pittsburgh, Mike Vellucci, this week joined the Chicago Blackhawks as an assistant.

Muse has not yet named any new members of his Penguins staff.

Why is Andy Chiodo still employed as the goalie coach? He has had that position since 2021 and look at how wonderfully successful the goaltending has been since that time. Hopefully he will be replaced as well. (Maybe new goaltenders as well!) There’s always hope!

Correction: Quinn was head coach of the rangers in 2021 shortened season as well for a total of three years as head coach of the rangers.

Good news. I want Muse to pick a staff that will be fully in step with what he’s trying to do. Then there’s no blaming hold overs for things that go wrong. Nothing against Quinn/Hennes and glad they found a landing spot.

Good, it means Pittsburgh will get a better draft pick next year if the rangers give us that pick, Quinn does nothing but lose everywhere he goes

Hoping the give us their 1st in 2026. We’ll have a better record than NYR this coming season.

Sometimes I wonder if Quinn was really here. Good riddance.
