Pittsburgh Penguins center Brian Boyle had surgery on his left knee today.

The precise nature of the procedure was not revealed by the team.

Dr. Dharmesh Vyas, the Penguins’ team physician, performed the operation at UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside.

Boyle’s projected recovery time is six weeks.

Boyle, 37, was injured hitting New York Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba during Game 6 of the Penguins’ first-round playoff series.

He made the major-league roster after going to training camp last fall on a professional tryout contract.

Boyle was an effective penalty-killer and bottom-six forward who had 11 goals and 10 assists in 66 games during the regular season and added two assists in a half-dozen playoff appearances.

He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this summer and has not ruled out continuing his career, although the Pittsburgh Penguins have not indicated whether they plan to try to re-sign him.
