Penguins Crowd Chants ‘Fire Hextall’

Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ron Hextall is not currently a popular figure amongst the Pittsburgh fanbase. Despite being on the job only two years, Hextall’s decisions have come under increasing scrutiny as the results have failed to reach anything resembling success, and fans are anxiously awaiting help before the March 3 NHL trade deadline.

The two-year contract to Jeff Carter with a signing bonus in the second year has become an unmovable albatross known as a 35+ contract.

The two-year deal to Kasperi Kapanen, seemingly over market value, has produced little.

And while Metro foes add players like Bo Horvat, Vladimir Tarasenko, and possibly Patrick Kane (the deal to New York Rangers isn’t done as of publishing), the Penguins have not made a trade all season.

Even as the Penguins’ third line has cratered to the depths of the NHL rankings, losses pile up, and a despondent feeling surrounds the team, there have been no changes to the roster.

Thursday night, as the Edmonton Oilers embarrassed the Penguins 7-2, the fans let their displeasure be known.

Chants erupted for multiple times, “Fire Hextall.”

Thursday night, reports swirled the Rangers were on the verge of adding Chicago Blackhawks superstar Patrick Kane. The New Jersey Devils have often been linked to San Jose Sharks sniper Timo Meier, too.

The NHL trade deadline is March 3, just eight days away.
