Sam Poulin will be among those at Penguins development camp.

Many of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ top prospects will be at development camp the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex beginning Saturday — and fans can be there, too.

The team on Tuesday announced plans for its prospect development camp, something that was not held last year during the COVID-19 shutdown. It will run Saturday, Sept. 18, through Tuesday, Sept. 21, ending two days before the Penguins’ main training camp opens.

Penguins development camp will be open to the public and free of charge. Things wrap up Tuesday, Sept. 21 with a scrimmage.

The participants at Penguins development camp are expected to include 14 forwards, seven defensemen, and three goaltenders. They include three players who seem most likely of the group to see time in the NHL this season — forwards Sam Poulin (first round draft pick, 2019) and Nathan Legare (third round, 2019), who recently finished their junior hockey careers, and Drew O’Connor (free agent), who appeared in 10 games with the Penguins last season.

Also invited are 2021 draft picks Isaac Belliveau (fifth round) and Ryan McCleary (seventh round), and goaltender Filip Lindberg who was signed to an entry-level contract in July.

It appears that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton coach J.D. Forrest and Pittsburgh Penguins skating and skills development coach Ty Hennes will oversee the on-ice portions of the development camp, although it is highly likely others in the organization also will help out. There also will be off-ice orientation presentations.

Fans were not allowed to attend Penguins practices at the Cranberry facility last season because of COVID-19 restrictions. PHN will see you back there this weekend.

The Penguins also announced training camp would begin on Sept. 23. More details and rosters to follow.
