Penguins Wrap: Draft Analysis, Free Agency, the Crosby Situation

A look back at the Pittsburgh Penguins’ past week was a look ahead, with lots of maneuvering while keeping an eye on the future. Of course, there was a lot to digest and analyze.

It was, as expected, the busiest week of the offseason to this point. The only thing missing that seemed to be on the docket was a contract extension for team captain Sidney Crosby.

Let’s catch you up. Click the links to read all the PHN coverage.

Saturday: With no picks in the first round, all of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ draft selections happened on day two in Las Vegas. After taking a big defenseman and an agitator with their two picks in the second round, there were four more picks in the later rounds.

The draft picks weren’t the only news, as the Penguins traded for veteran forward Kevin Hayes.

More details emerged on the process that led to David Quinn being hired as an assistant coach.

Sunday: In a move that seemed possible but still made for interesting news, the Penguins did not extend a qualifying offer to restricted free agent defenseman P.O Joseph, making him an unrestricted free agent and, as it turned out, ending his time in Pittsburgh.

Monday: The Pittsburgh Penguins set the tone for their moves on the opening day of free agency by signing defenseman Matt Grzelcyk.

The Penguins also signed depth defenseman Mac Hollowell.

Reilly Smith never seemed to fit well with the Penguins, and now he is gone, traded for more draft picks.

The Penguins signed another defenseman, this time essentially one of their own, bringing back Ryan Shea.

The Penguins’ next signing was, uh, not a defenseman. Anthony Beauvillier is taking a paycut to come to Pittsburgh.

What signee Blake Lizotte lacks in size, he makes up for in tenacity.

Penguins president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas held a press conference, and the takeaway is that the team is trying to build around its core to become a contender again in the next few seasons.

Tuesday:What good is a look ahead if you don’t have a schedule? Get the handkerchiefs ready for Marc-Andre Fleury’s final visit.

It was a busy day Monday. PHN’s Dan Kingerski puts it all in perspective.

Another signing — Sebastian Aho. Which one, you ask? Click here.

After the moves so far, what might the Penguins’ lineup look like?

Radio voice and former TV voice of the Penguins Steve Mears is moving just a little bit West, to Columbus.

Wednesday: So what’s up with Sidney Crosby‘s contract extension?

The roster for the Penguins development camp, which opens Saturday, invites some analysis.

Thursday: Dan Kingerski addresses free agency and Crosby’s contract status in a chat.

Friday: The Penguins this offseason are not keeping up with the teams they are vying with for a playoff spot.

A Russian goalie was added to the development camp roster.

So who is left out there who could help boost the Penguins’ scoring?

I think the Penguins took a big step back and will continue to be at the bottom of the East.
I wasn’t sure about Dubas when he was hired, I liked the EK deal…got rid of so e crappy contracts , but this off season has been very underwhelming.
All the East teams fighting for the last playoff spots improved, Penguins really haven’t….can’t rely on 4 players , older one at that, to carry them to a playoff spot, let alone be a contender.
I will just enjoy watching Sid.

Maybe Matt Gretzky will be as good as Uncle Wayne. Oh, sorry, wrong guy.

Don’t dream too much.
The cheap FA signings and the Hayes trade are a clear signal.
We’re going down.

What Lizotte lacks in size he makes up for with mediocrity
