Rodrigues Plans to Explore Free-Agent Market

NHL trade, Pitttsburgh penguins, Evan Rodrigues hat trick

CRANBERRY — While it still is possible that Evan Rodrigues will re-sign with the Pittsburgh Penguins, it apparently won’t happen until he has at least explored the open market.

Rodrigues is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday at noon, and a source familiar with the situation said via text Tuesday that Rodrigues “is gonna look around” before deciding where he will play next season.

He was a versatile and valuable role player for the Penguins in 2021-22, moving up and down the lineup and logging ice time at all three forward positions.

Evan Rodrigues, who was playing on a one-year contract with a salary-cap hit of $1 million, finished the season with 19 goals and 24 assists in 82 games.

The Penguins acquired Rodrigues and Conor Sheary from Buffalo for Dominik Kahun on Feb. 24, 2020. His rights were traded to Toronto that August in the deal that brought Kasperi Kapanen back here, but rejoined the Penguins as a free agent a couple of months later.

Since coming to the Penguins, Rodrigues has 27 goals and 31 assists in 124 games.

Other members of the 2021-22 Pittsburgh Penguins who are poised to hit the market as free agents Wednesday include Evgeni Malkin, Danton Heinen, Brian Boyle, Louis Domingue and Nathan Beaulieu.

I would rather see Hallander or Zahorna play. There is a real chance of an upside. Reid’s numbers are skewed with his hot streak.

BS. Numbers are numbers. If you don’t count hot streaks ALL players numbers would suck!

Correct. He is a ,25 per game player. Worth the league minimum.

So everyone who doesn’t score 19 should be cut right?

Ummmmm his 43 points in 82 games is more than 0.5 ppg. C’mon man!

I hope they sign E Rod. He gets to open space and has a good shot.
19 goals are hard to replace.

I’m fine with E Rod for the right price. That price can’t be over 1.5 million. You have to give Zahorna an opportunity, even if it’s left wing on the 4th line. He’s big, has decent hands and can skate… not to mention a nice cap hit.

I hope they keep him because of his versatility. Playing on all four lines, as well as taking a half dozen or more shots per game, aren’t bad qualities.

Gosh I hope they keep everyone! They haven’t won a 1st round playoff series since???? Now another 5yrs older. Lets keep them all. Paid for show not for dough!! Gotta have playoff wins!

Let him go and dont let the door hint him. See what his numbers are on some other team. Just another nobody, let the kids that are invested in this organization play.

It this tight salary cap world, that is a very good point! Plus he did disappear for the entire middle part of the season. Also, there are a lot of options for bottom 6 forwards hitting the market tomorrow….

And had 3G 2A in the playoffs. More goals than Sid and Rust. Dude is worth a contract.

Sid was out a game and I can remember a few wife’s chances he had with Sid setting him up. He is a flash in the pan.

Yeah he was of the best players on the ice in that last playoff game. Even the commentary guys were saying so. I’d keep him before Kapenen.

Grapevine had ReRod seeking 4 years $14MM…I’m wondering who laughed harder Burke or Hextall…

That being said…unless Pens make a serious run at the middle 6 – and no, Hextall, signing Michael Rafl doesn’t qualify – we’re stuck with Carter as 2C and no one in the bottom 6 worth a whit except Blueger and he needs to find a game away from ZAR…

I don’t know to me this kid (Rodrigues)does everything at and in the game except take tickets and drive the Zamboni. I like his energy and his willingness at times to sacrifice his body to move the puck north, south, east, west.

E-Rod is going to get more than what the Pens are willing to pay him. I wish we could sign him at a reasonable hit like $1.5 and trade Kapanen. E-Rod’s versatility makes him a good player.
