Pittsburgh Penguins star center and alternate captain Evgeni Malkin’s three Stanley Cup rings were stolen on Saturday during a home break-in.

The news division of Pittsburgh TV station KDKA, which first had the report, said that the back door of Malkin’s home in suburban Sewickley Heights was broken into on Saturday during a time when his security system was down, and that his safe was unlocked.

The Penguins had a late-afternoon game that day against Ottawa. Malkin did not play in that game because of an undisclosed injury, but players who are hurt typically are at the arena during games.

The Penguins released this statement Tuesday a while after their game against Seattle:

Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin’s home was burglarized this past weekend. Details of the situation will not be made public as this is an ongoing investigation. We are working closely with local authorities and team security. Malkin has requested that his privacy be respected during this time and we will have no further comment on the matter.

Malkin was activated off IR Tuesday and played in the Penguins’ 4-2 loss to the Kraken. He had an assist. On the season, he has eight goals, 32 points in 41 games.

Malkin spoke with reporters after the game Tuesday, but the break-in was not broached as the news had not broken yet.

It is not known whether anything else was stolen or damaged. Malkin earned the championship rings when the Penguins won the title in 2009, 2016 and 2017.

Other athletes across the nation have had their homes broken into lately, including Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals as well as Tyler Seguin of the Dallas Stars. It’s unknown whether the incident at Malkin’s home is related. The FBI has sent out alerts to major sports leagues about some of the other break-ins.
