Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins swins stick at Boston Bruins bench

BOSTON — The penalties at the end of the first period between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins will probably cost at least one player a few dollars after the NHL Department of Player Safety gets a good look.

At 19:38 of the first period, referees nabbed Penguins center Evgeni Malkin for swinging his stick at the Boston bench. However, an official review added a pair of Boston penalties to give the Penguins a power play but also showed why Malkin flung his blade in that direction.

Close replays not originally shown on the TNT broadcast also showed Nikita Zadorov jabbing Malkin from the bench. That’s a big no-no and will probably earn Zadorov a fine from DoPS. Boston forward Tyler Johnson was also given a tripping penalty after a lengthy review.

Malkin might also get a little wallet reduction for the stick swing.

The Penguins trailed 1-0 after the first period at TD Garden. Charlie Coyle scored for Boston. The Penguins and Boston were each 0-for-1 on the power play with the second Penguins power play from the Malkin incident extending into the second period.

UPDATE: The NHL has fined Malkin and Zadorov the maximum allowed under the CBA. Read more.

The 2nd shot, but at point blank.

With no Penguin defenders anywhere near the shooter.

Their biggest weakness: poor defense.

But they truly woke up after that and played some real D thenceforth, plus aggressive zone action. That was the energy and passion we’ve needed all year, right up to 00:00.1 left on the clock with the game-ending Jarry glove save.

Please don’t blame Jarry for that goal. He came out and challenged a wide open Coyle who beat him with a good shot.

Serious. Let’s not go there. That’s like saying a porthole was open on the titanic.

Ya, 3 Penguins went after the skater with the puck and no one covered Coyle who had all day to pick his shot. That one was not on Jarry….only big Defensive gaff that I recall from the game but it was a terrible one.

DoPS would be right to fine Malkin, too, but I’m still proud of him. One of the few who fight back when bullied on the ice. Don’t put up with bench goonery.

I remember when Tom Wilson (rhymes with trash-ilson) shouldered Jake hard under the chin and Sid’s gloves were off in a flash, planting a hook in Tom’s face. As well he should. Defend your teammates.
