Dan’s Daily: Penguins Allvin Frontrunner for Canucks GM, Goalie Stuffs Putin

Pittsburgh Penguins, Patrick Allvin

There are some things you just don’t do in Communist and authoritarian countries. Not letting the supreme chancellor, er, President, who has introduced plenty of opponents to their gravestone, score on half a dozen one-timers is one of them but there is video of a men’s league goalie just stuffing Vladimir Putin. More Pittsburgh Penguins execs are rumored to be on their way to the Vancouver Canucks to work with Jim Rutherford. And Kris Letang wants to play until he’s 40, at least.

Seriously, I love that goalie’s guts. If only the world’s body politic had the same stones.

Sportsnet: In Elliotte Friedman’s 32 Thoughts, in addition to the NHL trade rumors, he offered that Pittsburgh Penguins DIrector of Scouting Ryan Bowness could be going to Vancouver in some capacity. And he published the video of the goalie making the saves on Putin.

Province: Penguins AGM Patrik Allvin is thought to be the front-runner for the Canucks GM gig.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: For some reason, Queen’s hit “Who Wants to Live Forever” pops into my head. It was the perfect soundtrack for Highlander, but Kris Letang wants to play five more years, presumably for the Penguins.

From the arena to the airport, on a plane, to a waiting car and the hospital with just 11 minutes to spare. Penguins forward Brian Boyle made it to the hospital for the delivery of his son Callum on Saturday, barely.

Colorado Hockey Now: Adrian Dater called it the best goal he’s seen in 26 years covering the team–and he covered the Sakic and Forsberg years. The Avalanche won in OT and the GWG was a beauty. Watch the Cale Makar goal.

Metro Division, Wild-Card Playoff Chase

Detroit: Staying in the playoff hunt and taking down the San Jose Sharks, 6-2. The Detroit Red Wings aren’t giving up easily.

NYI: The kids are doing just fine–Noah Dobson and Keiffer Bellows are finally getting the call. They’re injecting life into the stale New York Islanders lineup.

Philly: Philly Hockey Now will re-launch on Jan. 10! Yesterday, the Flyers placed their top defenseman and top center in COVID protocol. Ivan Provorov and Claude Giroux are out.

However, Owen Krepps (Vegas beat writer) and I found this funny:

Giroux figured it out. However, the NHL doesn’t like professional media to admit the extra-legal method he probably used.

Washington: Between COVID and injuries and injury returns…the roster de Washington Capitals is a turnstile.

Boston: New Jersey isn’t a good hockey team. On Tuesday night, David Pastrnak finally had his slump buster, and the Boston Bruins won again.

Calgary: The Florida Panthers are really good. “That’s a different level of team,” Flames coach Daryl Sutter said on Tuesday after Florida outclassed the Calgary Flames.
