Pittsburgh Penguins, Casey DeSmith

DETROIT — With days to go before the Pittsburgh Penguins set their roster, it appears head coach Mike Sullivan has already made his decisions. Radim Zohorna was lost to waivers. Ryan Poehling and Josh Archibald settled into the Penguins lineup, and Ty Smith again played on the Penguins blue line with Jan Rutta.

Oh by the way, the Penguins beat the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2 at Little Caesars Arena. Casey DeSmith stopped 37 of 39 shots, including a few on a mad scramble in front of the net in the final minute.

“I made three saves. And then after that, I just laid there because I had no idea where the puck was,” DeSmith said through a big smile. “At that point, you just kind of hope that it’s under you somewhere. I don’t think it was, but the ref pulled me out a little bit there. But that was a scary, scary moment — I didn’t want to give up that third one and go to overtime.”

Defenseman P.O Joseph made the trip to Detroit, but was a healthy scratch. We may well have seen the last of Joseph in a Pittsburgh Penguins sweater. NHL trade rumors are swirling, and he’s not the favorite for the third pairing.
