Penguins Get Permission to Speak to Dubas, GM Hire Delayed

Kyle Dubas, Pittsburgh Penguins GM search

The Pittsburgh Penguins seemed to be closing in on their person to be the new general manager, if not zeroing in on another for the president of hockey operations. That process was halted over the weekend when now-former Toronto Maple Leafs Kyle Dubas unexpectedly joined the job market.

Per multiple Canadian reports, the Penguins asked and received permission to speak with Dubas.

And the process is in a holding pattern until that interview or those talks occur. Dubas could be a candidate for either role. FSG has historically not shied away from expensive contracts to general managers, famously offering Billy Beane one of the largest GM contracts in baseball, as dramatized by the movie Moneyball.

The Penguins are believed to have narrowed their field down to a handful of candidates, including Eric Tulsky, Dan MacKinnon, Steve Greeley, and Jason Karmanos.

Both Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet and Darren Dreger of TSN, both Toronto based, reported that Toronto granted permission.

Given the Penguins’ progress toward a new front office, the conversations with Dubas might not drag on. Multiple Canadian writers, including Ken Weibe of Sportsnet, have floated the prospect of Dubas joining the rival Ottawa Senators as new owners acquire the team. Friedman acknowledged there is some talk Dubas could be motivated to join the rivals.

However, Friedman believes the Penguins will get to make their pitch.
